Default Just curious how hard it would be to rewire?

So I'm graduating with my MA next year and will prob. have to move to California, so EJ20G in OBD2 car is prob a bad idea. How difficult would it be to rewire my car from EJ20G to EJ257? I know the 257 has AVCS+modern crank sensors/diff. intake manifold, but would it be a matter of just replacing all of the sensors, or is it more involved?

I hate to do this but your question doesnt make alot of sense and needs significant clarification.

You may need to move to California. OK. Cali is strict on emissions. Well known fact.
Does your car has a EJ20G engine in it currently? Is the engine there from the factory like a RHD JDM or is it a motorswap?

If its a motorswap are you wanting to swap in a full EJ257 drivetrain?

I do not understand your comment about EJ20G in obd2. Are you concerned that installing a standalone Engine management computer that supports OBD2 would go badly? I dont know that one exists but if it was a complete engine management package I doubt it would go badly.

How exactly do you intend to rewire an EJ20G to EJ257? Are you talking about taking the ECU and complete wireing harness from an EJ257 and merging it into the EJ20G wiring harness? Like the wiring harness portion of a motor swap without swapping the motor? Pretty sure it wont work.

If one exists to do what your asking I think you want a whole OBD2 compatible standalone engine management package.

I dont know exactly what your asking (I can only guess) but my best guess is that you do not want what your asking. I suggest instead you look into "the out of state registration requirements" in Cali and start there. If your vehicle is licensed and registered in Colorado or where ever you live you should be able to re-register it in cali when you move there.

1.) Yes. Swapped 95 WRX into 99 RS.

I already have a PFC+bolt ons. I'd prefer to have a USDM ecu for plug in purposes/open source tuning

I'm asking how involved is it to rewire the car for the USDM motor.

If you've done it once, you can do it again.

Everything else being equal, there are more wires to run and more things to go wrong. However, having done it once before should put you in front of the curve far enough to make it worth it.

It sounds like you already know the EJ20g has to go and a new motor needs to take it's place.

Idea....maybe you can find somebody that balled thier swap and is parting out a pre-merged harness?

It's just as hard as any other swap.

Remove all the EJ20G wiring, get an EJ257 harness and merge that in.

If you want this to be legal in CA, you need to go all out, the fuel tank and everything else back there needs to go in, all the emissions gear, both cats etc.
