I highly doubt anyone who was hard on yhe break-in is gonna go on a forum and post x amount of posts to vote that they were not following the manual during break-in and are having oil consumption.

As I said, I would commonly wind my engine up to 4k RPM, at 80% throttle, during the first 1k miles. I don't consider this a hard break-in, but it's not a gentle break-in process either. My friend with the oil-burning Forester probably shifted his car at a gentle 2.5k RPM, and accelerated very gingerly up to 2.5k. This to me is an overly-gentle break-in, and might be the root cause of his problems. |

We pretty much just drove ours like we normally would from the get go (except no cruise control). No consumption so far.

No, and I don't think it's relevant. If this engine requires a special break in procedure because of the oil weight, then Subaru would do it at the factory. This isn't a hand built race engine.
I wasn't overly gentle, nor did I abuse the car during break in. The theory that the break in is the cause of oil consumption is exactly that, a theory. With the millions of cars built and sold each year broken in thousands of different ways, you'd think there'd be oil consumption threads for all makes and models. But there aren't. There are for vehicles with FB engines though... The only people who know the cause are Subaru engineers, and I'm not even sure they know. |

I think they fired the engineers to make room for more MARKETING people.

So far the new engine is great! 2500 km and no oil burned as of yet. I'm keeping an eye on the dip stick but everything seems to be in proper working order. |

Were problem with piston due to break in, bad batch of rings? Any details they have? Are you breaking the new engine any different compared to the last engine? |

That's great news! Thanks for the update. This pretty much confirms all the rumors and assumptions about the new low tension rings being the cause of the problems. I wonder if it was just a bad batch of rings, or if Subaru revised them at some point.

QC is pretty spotty, cause they have had this problem since the 2011 foresters came out.

I am curious if the CVT doesn't compound the problem, seeing as Subaru's own break-in directions call for varying RPMs and the CVT insists that 2k is where it wants to live. I am constantly paddle down-shifting and giving it extra gas.

It had been awhile since I last Checked my oil level, So I checked just a moment ago.
I'm at 10,500 miles. 3K since last Oil change. With Fumoto Drain Valve in place. Zero Oil Loss!!! ![]() in another 2K I plan to take a sample for a UOA. The results of which will let me know if going to 15k (7.5k OCI) will be advisable. |

It would be nice if 6th gear could hold any kind of a grade. So far it will only do flat with no headwind. |

i finally voted in this one... voted for "hard, little/none consumption" but at the same time I did a lot of highway and constantly changing the RPM. when accelerating i routinely brought it up to 4000rpm, and i ran my "break in" period through 1600 miles. (due to the amount of highway) I also did 2 redline passes when the car had less than 200miles, but otherwise i was under 4,000 for the entire breakin period
currently sitting at 18,300 miles on my car, current oil change has 4400 miles on it, and i am just down to the top "full" mark. every oil change i have done on my car, 5.3qts puts me about 3/16" over the full mark. so I am down about 6oz from what i have seen in the past to see exactly how much it will take to bring it back up from there. |

Hey 79, I just reread my posts on this thread, and they say exactly what I thought I said, this poll is too small to be significant in any way, statistically.
Now you read what I wrote before, what did you think I said again? |

More consumption data:
6.00 quarts in 5.22 quarts out 4771 miles 1 quart per 6117 miles. These were easier miles in general than the last fill. Most of them were covered in fifth gear. |
