I guess as long as they are willing to extend my warranty somewhat, then I won't be too worried.

I'm confident they'll make it good for you.

Good luck.

I don't know if this will help or if you want to go this route.. but I would speak to SBOA and tell them you don't want the car due to this issue and resale impact. It is entirely possible they will put you in a brand new car, granted you may have to shell out some depreciation value, but may work best in the long run. Not saying it will happen but I would explore it.

And be sure about the warranty, that may be a bit sketchy, a new engine changes the warranty somewhat,, don't actually recall all of the details but I know I was not happy with what they were telling me when I went through similar situation with VW - I made a big enough stink when they had to replace my engine, I flipped, complained about having a new car with a new engine and the impact to the value of my vehicle, threatened them, and luckily they put me in a brand new option equivilant model, just had to fork up some depreciation cash. I went that route to have a new car without an engine swap, peace of mind. The engine swapped car ended up at some auction going for pennies on the dollar. Good Luck!!

I doubt it'll affect resale either way if factory trained techs do it. I wouldn't be concerned so long as it fixes it. I'm sure it will.

I may attempt this. However, I do have almost 28k mileage on the car, so the depreciation I'd have to pay might be too pricey for me to pay upfront right now. I just switched jobs and went from driving 40 miles one way to 2 miles...so I wouldn't mind starting fresh haha.

When my dealer called me to inform me that the district manager approved the swap, they said they already ordered the engine, without talking to me first.

Would I have to call SOA directly to explore that option, or should I first try to work with the dealer?

How long do you plan to keep this car?

If you plan on driving it into the ground like I do with my cars, then I don't think the depreciation is a significant concern. I mean, how much less do you think the car will be worth once it has 150,000 miles on it, if it doesn't have the original engine? Maybe this would be an issue if you plan on getting rid of the car with less than 75k miles on it.

But otherwise, I just don't think it matters. What DOES matter is that the new engine performs up to your expectations, and I think it will.

Good luck either way.

I'll probably drive this car to the ground. It's my first new car. I'm young, I plan on having multiple vehicles and I think the utility I can get out of my 5dr will make it worth keeping around as long as I can.

Good answer, which also (IMHO) allows you to not sweat the depreciation thing. A crusty old car is a crusty old car, regardless of whether the engine is original or not.

Most people are going to just end up trading it in for new car, and the actual depreciation/book value will be less of a concern than your ability to negotiate the new car purchase/deal.

When I bought my Impreza, they gave me a killer trade in credit for my previous car (even though I think my $20,500 was also a good price for the impreza), so it was all just part of the deal.

Dealer recently replaced shortblock under warranty due to oil consumption issues. I am about 300 miles in now, everything seems to be in working order. Keeping my fingers crossed and monitoring oil level.

Did your dealer extend your warranty in anyway?

There wasn't any mention of it when I picked it up. I was thinking of calling SOA about this.

Good news. How long did the dealership have the car to perform this procedure?

About 1.5 weeks, included waiting for parts to come in. They did a good job. Just hope this will solve my oil consumption issue.

I had my short block replaced as well due to oil consumption...after about 4500 km the low oil light came on again. It was down about .7 of a litre. I was quite pissed at this point.
Luckily enough it hasn't happened again and now after +10000 km there is a little to no oil consumption, which made me happy to see. I also get 50-70 more km per tank of gas. I hope yours is a positive result as well

Sounds excellent.

You say you've put 300 miles on the new short block so far. How many miles were required for you to detect oil consumption on the original engine?

This is awesome news. Sounds like Subaru is starting to take care of customers who follow the process required to quantify the problem. And I think it's understandable that SOA demands this data before performing a big job like replacing the short block.

Congrats!

My low oil light was coming on between 600-800 miles

Awesome. Probably just more break in consumption at first

They are going to replace the short block regardless...they have to under warranty. Talk to SBOA directly! As others have stated, if you plan on driving the car into the ground then I would agree. Just Keep it. Could not hurt to explore though. All you will gain is some consumer experience. Good Luck either way. I hope they fix your problem.
