was reading the owners manual today and it says on page 12-5 that 5w-30 or 5w-40 may be substituted if 0w-20 is unavailable. It did state that it should be be replaced with 0w-20 on the next change though. Makes me wonder if there would be any ill effect by just using 5w-20 or 5w-30 all the time, probably not.

The manual says those oils may be used "if replenishment is needed", which is not the same as filling the entire crankcase with 5w40.

i agree, I wouldn't use 5w-40 ever on this car even in a pinch

There's a big difference in what You and Subaru call acceptable. OCI is 7,500 and you say 1/2 quart but Subaru say more than 1 quart per 1,200 mi
Hearing from others like 79letour and Furiousd1983, we know that a fix is not going to happen.

For that "oil replenishment", I don't get that one at all. Subaru requires 0W-20 synthetic but you can use 5W-40 to bring the level back up Even if it's only a quart, 5W-40 is less efficient and doesn't protect as well at start up as other available choices so why mix heavy and thin. I would go with a 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30 instead.

I think I may try a 0w-30 for my next oil change and see if that helps to reduce my oil consumption. I burn approx a half quart of oil per 1200 miles which is only half of what's acceptable to Subaru, but still very unacceptable to me.

I know it's a new engine and all but have you thought about using an oil additive like Engine Restore to slow consumption? I didn't see anything in the manual about not adding stuff to the oil. I used it in the past and it works.

Hmm... haven't really thought about it but I know most car manufacturers frown on the use of any type of oil additive. It would be my luck that my engine grenades and they find an additive in my oil. Goodbye warranty.

I have a good feeling that switching to a heavier weight oil will help quell the consumption... the only question is: what possible adverse affects might arise by using a different oil? Besides a possible slight hit in fuel economy, I don't think anything serious would develop, but ya never know.

Easy - Little to no OC

I just drove the car. No time to worry about how I drive the car while going to school.

5 years later... still no OC

Some relatively small percentage of them do, and it's not just the new 2.0 liter engine. I know someone with a 2.5 liter Forester with the same problem.

It's my unproven theory that the break-in process matters. If you baby the engine during the first 1k miles, your chances of high oil consumption increases. Like I said, this isn't proven, but that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

When did everyone do their first oil change? Manual says 7,500 but just wanted to make sure it's ok to wait that long.

Personally, I wouldn't go more than 3250 miles before replacing the factory fill of oil. And then I'd replace the oil with a product other than Mobil1. I bought a 3-pack of Subaru oil filters on eBay for a good price. And I installed a Fumoto valve, but this is optional.

I did my first at 1,100 (changed it myself). I have a fairly short commute (just over 5 miles one way, stop & go) which probably qualifies as "severe conditions" so I plan on changing it every 3000 miles or so. I figure it's relatively cheap insurance, so why not.

Btw, no oil consumption yet (only 1600 miles on the odo tho).

First oil went @ 2K miles and again @ 5K miles. I do 5K OCI. Switched to Penzoil Platinum 0W-20 and I use the OEM filters too. I'm going to hit eBay also to get a bundle deal like sgoldste01 did.

FY'sI -When I went to the dealer for the first OC, the guy handed me a short blue filter. I said "No no no, the one that came from the factory was black and taller than that." So he goes and gets "the other one". Just wanted to point that out.

Ahhh I see. Ya know I heard that else where through the grapevine. Your basically saying check my oil often right?

Yes, at least for the first 7500 miles until you determine your car's consumption rate. I've been checking my oil level weekly, and haven't seen any consumption yet. I only have 2700 miles on the odometer, and 1000 miles since I did my first oil change.

Some people are saying that Mobil1 is more likely to be consumed than other oil brands, but I can't confirm this. I'm using Amsoil OE 0W20 right now.

@9,350 miles. Just check the oil and it's still looks about 1/4" over the circle as it was after the 5k OC. I'm just thankful the car has been mechanically sound up to this point.

Mine seems to have dropped about 1/8" over the last 1500 miles, not too worried yet, it might be the oil too. In another 2k it is getting dumped for Amsoil Signature

Those with consumption issues, is it primarily on subaru oil or aftermarket?

I'm still trying to figure out why the oil consumption means so much?

Oil is the Blood of the engine. It needs it to operate correctly, Its dead with out it. It might be the single most important fluid associated with your car.

And also people don't expect their brand new cars to consume oil.
