Right this. I came from a SS S/C we didn't have those problems. It's just new to me that's all. I'm learning the car.

Amsoil, subaru, kendall (never heard of it but very popular for the foresters)

I'm sure this is a good product, but since I have access to Amsoil OE 0W20 for less, that's what I currently use:

My first oil change was at 2956 miles. 2nd was at 7500. Car had shown no loss of oil up to that point. Low oil light at 12750ish miles and again at around 15k.

OK, so that means your oil light came on 5250 miles after the oil change. Do you know what kind of oil was put into your car when the oil was changed at 7500 miles?

I've read that on cold starts, the oil level covers the bores at least partially. Can anyone confirm this? Once oil is pumped throughout the engine, does the level sink to below the bores?

Does this also apply to EJs, and if so, how well do high mileage EJs retain their compression versus a typical inline four? If cold start wear is reduced, I don't have a problem with slightly elevated consumption.

Porsche specs its boxers to burn even more oil than ours. If this oil consumption is inherent to the boxer design, comparing it to inlines and Vs is pointless. Gravity works for and against them in different ways.

I don't have enough posts to vote but mine would be Recommended - Little to no OC

just over 5000 miles. I waited until 4500 for my first oil change, Castrol synthetic 0W20. I'll be watching for consumption closely over the next 5k though, hopefully nothing starts.

79, waiting ten minutes after shutdown is nothing. Let the car sit overnight and the level will rise significantly. I'm wondering if you guys who check the engine hot are overfilling and burning the excess off.

I don't know that overfilling would result in "burning the excess off". If you overfill an engine that doesn't consume oil, I don't believe it would burn the excess off. It might foam, which is bad for lubrication, but that's a different story.

A boxer may not be as tolerant of overfilling compared to an I or V engine.

It reads the same rt now and its been sitting three hours since I drove it fifteen miles at lunch. You can try do discredit/discount my oil consumption and dipstick readings, but you just don't get it. I've checked it a hundred times and a hundred ways, all I ever see is the level getting lower and lower every week. You guys are almost sad trying to come up with ridiculous excuses as to why my car is a lemon.

What is the engine's consumption rate over its lifetime?

Another huuge hole in your theory is that I've not added oil to my car. The dealer has. And I've asked SOA soooo many times for something in writing about dipstick gauges and oil capacity. I did my first change and poured in exactly 5.3 quarts and my dipstick read about 3/8 over the full dot. Two subsequent dealer changes have also shown the dipstick top full mark to be way too low on the stick.

I haven't drained it and measured but roughly a quart per 1500-2000 miles. I'm gonna drain it when the oil has 5k on it, measure, and put 5.3 quarts of Subaru oil in it. Since its on a dealer fill now, I won't know the exact rate till I dump the next fill. But my constantly dropping dipstick level is a good sign its burning it at a steady rate.

Mine was well over the full mark on 5.3q too, which is why I don't treat the dipstick as a precision instrument.

I have a drain valve fitted, so I'll be able to measure (and analyze) the remaining oil accurately in 1500 miles or so.

I'm looking forward to your analysis.

I am not sure how much oil, if any the wifes new Impreza is using. It currently has ~2,800 miles on it. I checked the oil level this morning at it was at the upper hole/marker on the dip stick. I don't recall 100% but I think this might be down alittle from when I checked it earlier on.

As for driving, I would say it was a normal break-in. She tried not to take it over 4k rpm for the first 1,000 miles. Commute to work is ~45 minutes and its about an even split of secondary roads and highway.

Also waiting for the engine and oil to cool is a good idea when taking a measurement. I checked the other day and it was below the upper mark, but it was very shortly after she got home.

I am planning on doing the first oil change this weekend.

It's my unproven theory that the break-in process matters. If you baby the engine during the first 1k miles, your chances of high oil consumption increases. Like I said, this isn't proven, but that's my story and I'm sticking with it.
You might be right about your theory. I read the manual before I drove the car, followed the break in instructions to the dot and my car consumes oil like a drunken irishman consumes beer. My low oil light has come on 3 times before my second scheduled oil change. Seems like the intervals of the light coming on are getting smaller and smaller. Started at about 4000km, then 3500, 3000, 2800, and now it just came on yesterday after 1800 km...Goooo Impreza!!

well I just did the first oil change today at 3,144 miles .... Oil level was just alittle below the upper mark/hole on the dip stick. I put in exactly 5.3 qts and it was a good 1/4" above this mark.
