Default WTF is this stuff?

I pulled my center console to clean it outside the car, and underneath I found this white powdery substance that smells ... like minerals? It's hard to explain what it smells like but it's really weird. There is alot of surface rust on the e-brake assembly but other pieces look clean. I also found this white residue under the carpet. by the back seats. I got the car from the original owner hear in Mi, it was always garaged. I'm confused with what this stuff is.

I think it's either salt or sand. Take some and taste it. Let us know what you find out.

It might be baking powder. If say he spilled a liquid and it went all over then he might have used baking powder to absorb it. Can't recall if the 06 was offered in the limited but if it has a sunroof and water got it from a rain storm then he probably used the baking powder to suck it up and get rid of the smell and then just couldnt suck it all up.

There's no way I'm putting that in my mouth! (thats what she said)...

I was thinking maybe it is salt. Where I found it under the rear carpet i found that the floor plug/grommet was gone. The PO claimed he never drove the car in the winter... but I dunno..

Still doesn't explain it being under the center console!

How well did you know this previous owner?

The previous owner is a friend of mine... wealthy also. I don't see why he would have a flood damaged car and if he did I don't see why he would lie about it. He didn't take the best care of it (cleaning, detailing) but the car is in very nice shape.

I remember back in high school a kid snorted the white power off the battery terminals. He's still alive somehow!

It's definately not sand, it seems like some sort of lime buildup or something. Has a sour odor to it and it bothers my nose.

looking at that rust..looks like it was flooded at one point. that sand sure does look like blasting media. Or your car was used to transport sand and it clearly spilled everywhere

Desiccant beads are usually much larger though. This is more of a powder. It is definitely not sand. The rust concerns me as well... Has anyone else seen this on their car?

The original owner is a friend of mine! He swears the car has never been under water.

I just ran a CARFAX on it and it came back 100% clean! He said he had an issue with unusually high humidity in his garage before it was insulated. The surface rust that is on the handbrake is extremely uniform, no spottyness. You think if it was wet that it would have looked spotty.

Carfax and other similar companies don't always show everything. One personal instance being a clean report. I run myself a quote with the vehicle (I'm an insurance agent) and it pulls the insurance history as total loss of 18k.

Honestly, seeing that you live in detriot, this doesn't surprise me.
look at the front bolts holding your front two seats down, are they also rusted?
Ontario wrx's are very common with this also just from the salt used on the roads out east as well as the atmosphere. Its surface rust, nothing to get bent out of shape about, take some light sandpaper and some plastidip and spray away my friend!

Makes perfect sense!

Buy AWD vehicle, never use it where the AWD would come in handy!
