I agree, they are quite overdone, and most of that excessive visual weight hangs in the front too. They probably have road presence, which is important, but i don't see why magazines seem to think that they are all that good looking.

I don't find the A hatch ugly; I just don't think we in the US are used to seeing M-B hatches. The boy racer stripes and the rear wing "for the STi and Evo people" look like tacky aftermarket additions even by AMG standards.

The CLA just serves to show that the CLS doesn't scale down well.

I don't care much for the rounded noses M-B is putting on their cars; it makes them look less distinctive and, at least on the E, looks like a poorly-conceived mid-cycle refresh (like the '06-08 Forester). I also don't care for the expansion of the "sports grille" across the model lineup; the big star is the right size for a Sprinter or Unimog but not for a compact or mid-sized sedan. Of course that's personal and I imagine a lot of badge-conscious folks love it, and will love the LED-illuminated star option even more.

I'm a bit ambivalent about that illuminated three pointed star. It's certainly very conspicuous, and the idea of literally putting lights on the badge seems kind of tasteless. But on the other hand, I actually think it would look pretty nice purely from the design stand point. The MB star is one of the most iconic logos of any industry, and it's been a defining feature of MBs' front end for years. It's just that it had been conspicuous only during the day, and now it will be at night as well. In that sense it's kind of like the angel eyes for BMW, which made their trademark round headlights into a very distinctive night time feature.

I guess it would've been more tasteful if it was a very distinctive visual feature that was something other than the logo itself.

I just sold a 375hp forester xt with 2004 sti tranny and now drive an AMG ML63.

you wont miss a manual trans when you drive AMG auto. Its unlike any other. 7 sped, it holds gear instead of upshifting when it senses you are in aggressive mood.

It's going to become the norm as the years progress. Watch each mfr do this with their emblem over time. it's free marketing as they will roll the cost of the "illumination" into the sale price as well as service.

I would like it from a motorcycle perspective as it would increase visibility at night.

I doubt that, unless you ride around at night without your lights on. I don't think a glowing emblem will really make it much more visible than a bright headlight on one end or a red taillight at the other. Besides, it's not like a glowing emblem is going to be very visible if you're more than 50 feet away.

^ I'm not surprised they found it laggy. You would need sequential twin turbos or supercharger + turbo (like the new volvos) to make that kind of power with the response people expect these days.
