Default Ford wins Engine of the Year

Quote:
Here's a piece of fact that will impress your inner engineer/repel women/cause spontaneous apnoea: the block on Ford's 1.0-litre three-pot petrol engine is the same length as a sheet of A4 paper!
This is important, because this diddy little engine has just won the 2012 International Engine of the Year award.
The panel voted for the tiny engine over its competition from BMW, Ferrari and Volkswagen, noting the excellence of its engineering. When we drove it, we rather liked it too, as TG's Paul Horrell noted: "It's far better to drive [than the old Focus engines] because it's quieter, more characterful and torquier. What's not to like?"
It also won in the Sub 1.0-litre and Best New Engine categories. Elsewhere, BMW won with its 1.6-litre turbo petrol (1.4 to 1.8-litre), the 2.0-litre turbo (1.8 to 2.0-litre), the 3.0-litre twin-turbo sixer (2.5 to 3.0-litre) and the 4.0-litre V8 in the M3 (3 to 4.0-litre). Audi scooped the best 2 to 2.5-litre category with its excellent 2.5-litre turbocharged five-pot in the RS3, and Volkswagen won with its twin-charged 1.4-litre petrol unit (1 to 1.4-litre).
On one opposite of the scale, GM won the Best Green Engine with the 1.4-litre range-extender fitted to the Volt and Ampera.
And on the other end of the scale? An engine that led TG's Tom Ford to proclaim: "The noise doesn't so much filter its way in through the medium of your ears, but explode bomb-like in the centre of your head, splashing white-hot sonic shrapnel against the back of your eyes. It's so loud and penetrating it stings."
The winner of the Best Performance Engine category goes to Ferrari's 4.5-litre V8.

FEV did much of the development, but I suppose that shouldn't be surprising. I had an opportunity to examine a display version of this engine. It uses a turbo sourced from Continental, and a wet-belt system where the oil pump is literally driven by a belt bathed in oil. The injectors are top mounted instead of side mounted like the Ecoboost 3.5 .

! liter is a motorcycle or waverunner engine in my book. But you can look for this to be your auto motor soon as they try to make a world economy it also mean a world quality of living. Welcome to your international lifestyle America. I hope you like your relatives cause they will be sharing your home with you too. Oh yes you will share 1 car too. An award winning POS so Make sure you get the manual as it is a Ford engine and will need repair often.

Exactly. 1.0L 3-cyls with 125 hp are commie engines, while 1.8L 4-cyls with 125 hp are freedom motors. USA! USA!

It is a Ford engine only in the loosest sense. It wasn't developed in the US and much of it was developed by an outside company, FEV (a German engineering firm). It was at the FEV display at this year's SAE world congress.

It's very different from the Ecoboost 3.5 even though it's turbo and direct injected. The injector is located next to the spark plug (like a BMW), not between the intake valves like the 3.5 .

So please save your anti-Ford ramblings because they aren't relevant to what is basically an outsourced European engine.

Ford has come a long way but they still need better quality as Trans and drive shaft problems in Mustang. The ink the 1L motor for EU and other areas anyway. The fuel taxes are so high that's all they can afford is a 1L

Why not? I bought a Subaru, even though NASIOC says the engines are terribly unreliable, blowing up all the time, and the transmissions are made of glass.

Subaru won the award in 2006 (EJ255) and 2008 (EJ257) for even though there are apparent factory issues. These type of awards should be taken with a grain of salt. Every engine that won this award has some sort of issues at one point.
