i would be inclined to find a different oil if they are flagging the viscosity.

What should the viscosity number be?

Why should I change oils? A 20 weight oil is between 5.60-9.29 @100c. Most likely a lab error.

Total base number - the oil's remaining resistance to becoming acidic.

Blackstone charges extra for this number.

Right, but how does it translate to usable oil life? I'm still about 2 months away from getting my first UOA done. Supposedly my oil started out at 12.6 tbn

I imagine how quickly it's depleted depends on time, driving style and environmental conditions, so it would be hard to translate it to miles or months.

When they send you the report back do they give you a recommendation?

I did some research on tbn last night and I understand what it is now, just not sure how to apply it

There's a check box on the form where you can indicate if you're interested in extended intervals. Then they'll tell you whether you should go longer next time.

Basically, if it's less than 1.0, don't wait as long to drain.

At 11k miles on the odometer, I just sent a sample into Blackstone for analysis. The oil I've been using since the factory fill is Amsoil OE 0W20. I paid the extra $10 for the TBN analysis.

I'll post the results here when I have them.

I'm not sure. This is my first UOA submission. I sent it on Monday, and I suspect they will receive it today. They have my email address, but I don't know if I'll get the results via email or postal mail.

I'll stick with the Amsoil OE if the analysis looks good. The only thing I might change would be the oil change interval, if the TBN test shows that there was a lot of life left in the oil's additive package. I did my first change at 1700 miles, and then I've been on approximately a 5k mile OCI since then.

By the time I get my oil changes next week I will have 8000 on my signature. I have no issues with the oil and I will be pulling a sample for analysis as well, but for peace of mind while under warranty I will probably change to OE or XL

I don't know if this is true, but I've read on this forum that people say there's not much difference between OE and XL, so you might as well save money and buy OE. Signature, on the other hand, is very different, and might justify the extra cost.

Only a UOA on the Signature could prove that it lasts enough longer than OE to be worth it. I look forward to seeing the results from your Signature UOA.

I tried xl on my first oil change, it was ok, on paper it is pretty similar to oe

Im curious how Mobil1 or another cheaper and common oil compares to the amsoil. I hear alot that these boxer engines are picky with oil.

If someone who uses Mobil1 is willing to pay for an oil analysis, you'll get your answer.

If you buy a 5 qt jug of Mobil1 0W20, you'll pay $25 ($5/qt). My Amsoil OE 0W-20 is $6.10/qt. So you would save approximately $6 on oil at each oil change by using Mobil1.

With all of the (possibly misguided) reports of problems with Mobil1, I'll pay an extra $6 just for peace of mind. But I'm guessing the Mobil1 is just fine.

I think around here it is closer to 28-29+ tax for Mobil 1(haven't seen 0w20)and I can get amsoil oe for pretty much the same price after shipping.

Then, IMHO, there's no reason for you to use Mobil1. Unless my Used Oil Analysis shows something problematic with the Amsoil OE product, which I don't expect to happen. My car's running great. I'd fall out of my chair if Blackstone saw something that indicates a problem.

that was my point, mobil 1 really isn't that much cheaper. but it is a decent oil

Well I use M1 because its easy to find, cheap, reputable brand, dont have to pay for shipping. I would use amsoil if it was close in price but I think last time i checked it was close to $50 for a gallon and a quart or two on the side plus shipping.

Does anyone have any cheap sources? or coupon codes for it?

AND i forget where i read but that the OE is very similair to M1 and both are group III i think. I think the XL and signature are group 4? I may be wrong about this.
