Default Wastegate adjustment, td04 Question

So I am purchasing a td04 turbo from a member, but while the turbo was off the car and sitting around, something fell on the stock wastegate and put a gash in it. So now I am going to have to find another wastegate to put on this turbo but I have a few questions since this will be a "added" wastegate rather than the one that came factory on the turbo....

1. the turbo is coming off a 02-05 2.0L, so do I need to get a 02-05 wastegate rather than one off a 06-07 2.5L ?

2. And since its not a factory wastegate, adjustment wise, how do I do it? Any tricks?

3. Where and the hell can I find a wastegate lol I would assume that most people diont just sell these since they come with td04's when people buy them

Sorry, I am a noob regarding these things.

Are you talking about the wastegate actuator or the wastegate flap itself ? If it's the actuator you would need to get one off an 02-05 wrx. Removal of the wastegate actuator is very simple and adjustment is made loosening the nut on the wastegate arm and adjusting the length of the arm.

My bad, its the actuator. This guy.......and how do I adjust it? And it has to be a 02-05 correct, just making sure.

Here is a dumb question(if I can find one), once I install it on the turbo and bolt the turbo on. How do I know if it needs to be adjusted?

And in all honesty, I would rather just like to find a 02-05 td04 with lower miles that has never been taken apart cause I would assume that all the 02-05 actuator arms are adjusted exactly the same from the factory.

After you get the new actuator on, take it out for a drive and see if you're hitting your target boost. To adjust the Arm you need to first loosen the lock nut, then remove the c clip and pull the arm off the wastegate flap. You adjust the length of the arm buy turning the part that connects to the wastegate flap. If you are under boosting shorten the arm. If you are over boosting make the arm longer. Two half turns = one full turn. Fit the arm over the flap again, put the c clip on and tighten down the lock nut.

Whatever you do dont try and turn the whole wastegate arm just the part that connects to the flap.

and Yup 02-05 only, the 06-07 Wastegate actuators have a heavier wastegate spring I think.

I hope that helps.

Good info, but let me ask u this. I have a frakenstein tdo4 on my car now and my tuner said that the car is hitting boost alittle bit slower than other stg 2 cars he has tuned. I have a TBE and UP pipe and a GS 3 port, however my tdo4 consists of this.....

Hot Side is out of a 08 wrx
cold side (snail) and actuator is out of a 02 wrx.......any thoughts on what I would have to do to the wastegate actuator to get a faster responce. BTW in 3rd gear at 2500 rpm, when I go WOT I hit full boost around 3300-3500ish rpm. It is before 3500rpm. And I thought stg 2 2.0L with my normal stg 2 mods were hitting full boost around 3100-3200rpm?

Any suggestions on how to fix?
And what rpm DO normal stg 2 2.0L wrx's fit full boost?

Thanks for the insight guys

Sadly I dont have an answer for any of these questions. I'm sure you can find the stage 2 full boost RPM with a quick search. My only guess is to check for any exhaust leaks before the turbo. Tightening the arm may help out but again I'm not sure and I dont want to lead you down the wrong path.

What made you use the 08 hotside? Is it suppose to make more power?

I went with the 04 hotside because my friend with the 08 was getting rid of it and buying a 20G for his car. And I knew the turbo only had about 30K on it and was in good shape. However I didnt kow that it would spool a bit later. And no I dont think it is a "higher" powered td04, but I wonder if that since it spools a few hundred rpms slower....i wonder if it carries a "few" hundred rps higher in the power band I dont know thou.

Even though 02-08 wrx's use "td04's" I have really think that when they switched from the 2.0L to the 2.5L that their were changes made, they may be minimal, but still changes.
