BAHAHA D'Antoni.

Enjoy almost winning. At least you'll score a lot.

Sounds like Phil was overestimating the Lakers' desperation by basically asking for the franchise to be turned over to him.

I'm going to guess the Lakers beat the Heat in the Finals this year.

I really think it's ego more than anything else, these team owners have NO patience, I'm sure at the end of the season, people will say, "what if Phil"

So far the top two worst decisions of this season have to be.

1. James Harden Trade
2. Not getting Phil back to LA

I'm guessing Phil is tired and didn't want to come back.

According to ESPN, Phil was shocked, I think he was preparing to return.

The Lakers could have had anyone. They end up with D'Antoni? Tilapia's right: you're going to succeed, and almost win the whole thing, but that's going to get old really quickly in LA.

There are a few saving graces for you guys: you've got the point guard who had the most success under D'Antoni's offense; and you've got a couple of naturally good defenders in Howard and Kobe. That just might be enough.

I absolutely hated the decision when the Knicks hired him, because there's no defense in his system, but we didn't really have the talent that the Lakers have. I still don't think he can win it when it counts, but maybe Kobe can pull the team together on the floor for defense.

Not really. The options were PJ, D'Antoni, Dunleavy, and I guess Van Gundy was available but we weren't going to see Howard/Van Gundy v2.

I'd bet you an M5 on this, but I don't have one to put up.

Yeah, that's a good point. Between those options Van Gundy is the best, in my opinion. But, as you mentioned, it would have been a problem with Howard.

Hardin trade was a bad deal for OKC. He was key in returning them to the finals. Now he's in Houston going now where. Kind of a selfish move but I understand money and a starting position talk.

Van Gundy is possibly worse than Mike Brown.

And Dunleavy would have been the option if you wanted to convey a "We give up this year" vibe.

Absolutely shocked though that they didn't bring Phil back. Maybe you shouldn't sign players who can't learn something more complicated than a JV flex offense.

No way. Both Van Gundys have extremely high basketball IQ. I'd hire either of them in a second.

High IQ means nothing when you can't get a team full of superstars to play together. Guy is worthless. I do like the other one better.

While I never got to watch Jeff (enjoy the hell out of him commentating though) I've always wondered why Stan gets such praise. Watching him in Orlando he never really struck me as a fantastic coach. On the other hand, I've seen Brown actively doing retarded things back in Cleveland so I'd probably take Stan over him.

Would have been HILARIOUS if they had hired SVG though.

I saw Stan vs Brown in Cleveland a few years ago. It was a battle of twits.

That would have been great.

Reminds me of when the Knicks had D'Antoni and then signed Amare. I know he and Amare had issues in Phoenix, and is likely part of the reason D'Antoni was available.

I'll state now that your guess won't happen.

Let's see. D'Antoni likes to shoot within like 18 seconds of the shot clock. That means a lot of running. Running on old legs and knees of Nash, Gasol and Kobe. Kobe can do it but the other two? Nash isn't young like before and just got injured too. Gasol is more of a back to basket guy with some spot up. Also, Lakers run a middle school bench.

Phil should go coach the Clippers once VDN gets the can just to spite Buss.

The Van Gundys are good coaches. As a Knicks fan, I saw plenty of Jeff, and I've seen enough of Stan to say that he does, in fact, know what he's doing. Mike Woodson is doing a good job thus far with the Knicks, but I would also be ok with a Van Gundy hire.
