Default 96 brighton motor swap options

I am new to the forum so forgive my ignorance. I recently purchased a 1996 Impreza brighton 2 door as a project car. The car is going to be completely stripped an caged. I'm wondering what would my best option for reliable turbo power. I am looking for something in the 300 hp range. I am in CA so smog is going to be an issue but I plan on keeping the 1.8 and swapping out for smog. Again, please forgive me if is has been asked, I couldn't find too much when I searched the forum. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i have a 96 L wagon that i did a full swap on that would probably be able to pass emissions in cali.
i swapped in the entire dash/interior/chassis harness from a 98 2.5 rs and used the stock rs ecu with a greddy emanage blue to run a v4 sti ej20k.
the car puts down 240/217 @18 psi and runs on 91, no cels and it passed the obdII test and visual inspection in nevada.
the only downside is the rs ecu has a rev limit of 6500 while the 20k can rev to 7800, so its slightly detuned to compensate. im working on a harness that will allow me to use the jdm ecu 99% of the time and just swap out the rs ecu for smog.
