Default Cobb Catback vs Gimmick V3 Catback

Thinking of getting a catback as a first mod for my 02 wrx waggie. I'm thinking of getting a Cobb for it's quality or a Gimmick for the price. Both look similar and I think the Gimmick is louder, which I kind of want. Is the extra money spent on the Cobb worth it in your opinion? I'm the kind of person that likes to make investments when I purchase something so I'm heavily leaning towards the Cobb due to their reputation, but I wouldn't mind saving $300+ if the difference is negligible. Any wisdom you may have to offer me regarding this purchase is welcomed.

you'll probably get sick of the louder one after a while...

edit: yea, I just looked at the gimmick catback... that thing is going to be loud as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuk... straight through mid pipe, no resonators. Buy that if you dare

I had the older gimmick catback and honestly I don't think it was that loud compared to the other exhausts on the market. I don't know how it compares to the Cobb though. No drone with that exhaust at all.

Cobb is always well, cobb! Top notch, quiet, what the mature crowd is looking for. I have literally stuck my head in the trunk of a subaru while it was being driven, the gms is now as loud as you think it is. the muffler does a good job of quieting it down. Its a compromise between a straight exhaust and the cobb exhaust. The price savings is nice and it is a unique design. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Like many other exhausts there are many ways to "skin a cat" but both will do a great job, its personal preference and budget that will really set each on their own route.

No resonators doesn't automatically mean it's loud. Cobb's catback has none, either.

Cool, thanks. Leaning towards the gimmick now so far.

Assuming the GMS catback sounds like the other Ebay clones from 2 years ago, I'd pick up the GMS. I love the idea of a v-band clamp eliminating a gasket.

I had a SpeedTech catback I bought back in December of 2010 that I eventually sold to a friend... Loved that sound. Tried buying another SpeedTech earlier this year, then the "genuine" ebay and they both sounded identical... Like crap. Raspy, especially at part throttle. I soon bought a Cobb axleback that mated up to the SpeedTech midpipe with some creative wiggling and standard-length hangers. Happy with the Cobb, but the original SpeedTech was slightly deeper and a bit louder, but still just fine for interstate driving.

I had a Gimmick. Wasnt loud at all and sounded great but i had an earlier version i think which now i have a Greddy Ti-C because the GMS hangars rusted pretty bad; one off of the muffler and the other off the midpipe after a winter here in CO. I wash my car frequently in the winter to rid the Mag-chloride and crap but it still damaged it. Again it was a early version and i did like the sound and the stealthy oem look.

True. If this exhaust did have a resonator it would be a bit quieter though. The noise level is mainly dictated by the muffler. From my experience with can style mufflers, the resonator does make a difference. This isnt a can though.

Vband is a nice option. If they sound the same with the same noise level and fit well, then its really a no brainer to go with the cheaper one.

Since the gms mid pipe is almost completely straight it's easy to add a cheap straight through muffler or resonator for cheap. I know that defeats the purpose of going with the cheaper option, but it is an option.
I'm considering doing that and adding an aero turbine in the midpipe.

I just picked up the v2 version of the gimmick catback. So far i like it... i previously had the meganracing stealth catback and that rusted out with in 2 yrs of owning.. the gimmick catbacks quality is definately there.. welds are perfect and it fits nice and tight. It tends to get a lil more raspy and louder than the megan but i like it... and definately mellow and boxerih/burbley when creeping cruise through town.

Cool man, thanks for your reply. Can you possibly post a video of some revs, different angles of it on your car, etc?

I bought the new Gimmick vband catback, but need an adapter to run on my stock dp (2002 WRX Wagon); now just want to go right ahead and get a downpipe, fuel pump, tmic, gates timing, vf39, cobb intake, coils, endlinks, sways, clutch, you know just a few things; mind you I barely knew what a Subaru WRX was before NoVember of last year (2011), let alone any car anymore. I grew up in the Los Angeles area and the last time I was into cars this much was when I was pining over Impalas and going to Lowrider shows in junior high. That says a lot, at least to me, about the culture and respect that being part of the Subaru community inspires.
I used to think of Japanese culture as a copy cat of American culture back then, as they were dressing like vatos and importing lowriders, but now I see the Japanese culture as so much like America: great, young people, making ballsy, aesthetic choices that defy the mainstream culture. In case I haven't been clear enough, Japanese culture is the ish.
***I could go on about Japanese culture for days, so anyone that wants to talk about it let me know.***
The American enthusiast scene is also equally as important, largely setting the standard for what is considered cool (arguably so, as of late).
In short, these cars are great and so please, share whatever you can about your experience with your new catback.
I just sent in my v1 Cobb AP for a new one; getting it on Thursday. To be continued...

How is the drone with V3?
I had to sell my Cobb because drone on my wagon was just unbearable, otherwise Cobb was perfect cb.

I'm still saving for a downpipe now. I'm going to post a review video and stuff once I get everything I need to install. It's funny you mention it though 'cuz I wanted the Cobb, opted for the Gimmick for the price and hoping it would be louder than the Cobb. But now that you've said you have a wagon and had to ditch the Cobb I'm getting worried. Couldn't we just sound-proof the truck compartment?

Yea, I would definitely like to see some videos because I want a cb that's not too loud but still has a great boxer rumble!

Cobb with aftermatket dp is plenty loud, people will definitely notice it. You can sound proof your car but you'll spend close to $200 and add weight. This was not an option for me. If you want good boxer rumble and no drone, look into Maddad whisper.

I just had a Grimmspeed upipe, invidia dp with Cobb replica installed on my 03 and it was exactly what I was looking for, when I'm not on it you just hear a small rumble but when I'm on it, it has a perfect boxer sound, I only get compliments, everyone comments on how when I'm just driving around it is quiet but when I'm on it, it sounds like a totally different car . On the highway you cant even tell you have an exhaust (i had a civic w/flowmaster ridiculous drone, I couldn't take another loud setup so I went with this and love every second of it). If anyone wants a video I can text you one, just pm me.

the new vband versions do have a nicely packed muffler. We are now offering the black coating in house that will last for something like 20 years. previously we had outsourced it and they just didn't put in the prep work and use the high end materials needed to. being baked on at 700 degrees for two hours sure helps. i just put in an order for another 100 because the first batch went so fast. its nice to have a decent quality product that is unique and affordable.

happy motoring.
