Default Formula 1 2012 - Round 9: The British Grand Prix at Silverstone

Alonso has a strong driver's championship lead heading into round 9 after a shocking win due to Vettel's, Grosjean's, and Hamilton's retirements in Valencia.

Situated in the picturesque fields of Northamptonshire, England, round nine of the 2012 Formula One Championship takes place at mighty Silverstone. It's the oldest, and one of the fastest, circuits on the calendar.

Often prone to rain, the story of last year's race was the restrictions imposed on off-throttle diffuser blowing. Up to that point, Red Bull had enjoyed a distinct advantage, followed closely by the Mclaren, but the Ferrari driven by Fernando Alonso emerged as the quickest of the weekend, despite RBR locking out the front row in qualifying.

The race started in the wet, but quickly dried, and Lewis Hamilton briefly held the lead, before relinquishing it due to an insufficient fuel load. Alonso claimed the lead in the final stint and pulled away from his rivals to take his team's only win last season. Mark Webber pushed Vettel all the way to the finish line, despite orders from his team to "maintain the gap", and the RBRs came home second and third. Jenson Button retired after his RF wheel was improperly fastened during a pit stop, and Lewis Hamilton had yet another coming-together with Felipe Massa in the closing corners.

I will be at the track all three days, I've got a new 400mm zoom lens, and will be uploading pics as usual!

Goodwood wasn't really on my radar this year. That may change as the weekend approaches.

So how many races do you get to go to a year w/GPT? Sounds like a nice gig. Do you get to watch the race at all, or do they keep you too busy to enjoy it?

I had a videographer buddy that had a seemingly awesome job traveling the world on a research ship with tour groups, but he hated it since he spent all his time shooting during the day, and editing through the night so he could have DVDs ready by the end of the trip.

I'd love to see Schumacher win, but I'd have to say the favorites are Vettel or Hamilton. I wouldn't be surprised if Button gets the win in front of his home crowd though.

Too tough to predict the races these days.

I bought my tickets through the F1 website, as per my usual. I do Paddock Club once a year (last year was Spa), and I try to reserve it for the track that's most likely to rain. This year, I wasn't sure if I was going to be off work on Friday, so I only got the 2-day PC tickets. I grabbed a Friday GA later on because all the grandstands had sold out. The photos are purely for fun and my own collection. Some day I'll drop the cash to get them all blown up to decorate my house.

My vote is for Vettel in Britain. Of all the races I've attended, a Red Bull has only been off the top step of the podium once (Maldonado in Catalunya). After the last race, I think it's foolish to bet against him. I am a die hard Mclaren fan, though, and I will cheer for them the loudest!

Ahhh - I think I got you confused w/ArtKevin who I think does watercolor paintings for GPT or some other tour group at various F1 events.

OK! Time is getting short and you need to start posting your predictions for the race!

Mine: Ferrari vs. Red Bull again with Mclaren fighting over the scraps.

F1.com is predicting rain Friday and Sunday, but possibly dry for Saturday. Rain in England? No wai!

Perez will work wonders, and Kobayashi will bounce off other people.

Senna will continue to look like a chump.

Heikki might deliberately take out a Toro Rosso to bring out a safety car giving Petrov valuable position.

What's the over-under on Maldonado purposefully crashing into someone who gets in his way?

I'd be beside myself with this result. I'd even be happy if Grosjean won!

Weather update: 20% chance of rain Friday, much higher chance Saturday and Sunday. This works for me, since I'll be battling the crowds for prime photo locations in General Admission the first day.

I've been playing with my new long lens and I'll be using a monopod for the first time.

My picks... Kind of shooting darts in the dark...

Quote:
1 Lewis Hamilton
2 Sebastian Vettel
3 Fernando Alonso
4 Mark Webber
5 Nico Rosberg
6 Kimi Raikkonen
7 Romain Grosjean
8 Jenson Button
9 Sergio Perez
10 Michael Schumacher
I think I should put Button higher but if his car is off I should be ok. This coming from a Button fan...

I think it would be really cool to see lotus at the top, and it's been coming to them for a while now. I hope they can make it work here.

Here is my take:

If it doesn't rain:

Vettel
Grosjean
Webber

If it rains and all (or most) cars on track:

Hamilton
Button
Raikkonen
