Default Scotch Guard Application Tips

I have some questions about scotch guard application. The dealership offered to protect my fabric for some high price but I know the stuff is like $7 a can.. so I can do it myself. Ive searched NASIOC and couldn't find answers/consensus for the following:

1. Do you apply the stuff to the seats while they are in the car, or remove them? I ask because I do not want to affect surrounding plastic if it comes in contact with it. Will it stain the plastics?

2. Is it worth doing the carpet as well? Or do people just do the seats and call it good?

3. Is scotch guard a good product for automotive use?

4. Is this a useless thing to do, or does the stuff really work?

5. Does this stuff leave a bad odor for a while? (never smelled it)

6. How many cans does it take to do a car?

7. How often should it be reapplied?

I would be doing this on a week where I have the garage so I can leave windows down overnight and avoid any cancerous fumes.

Any tips are welcome before I do this, and I will post back with results and tricks I learned.

I've done it on all my cars and when ever I've had a spill they clean right up, so I would recommend it for the price. As for your questions..

1. Yes in the car is fine, just have a clean rag to wipe off overspray when it happens. Ive done a few cars this way with no issue.

2. I would definitely do the carpets. Makes cleaning those winter salt/sand/dirt stains a lot easier.

3. There is specific auto use stuff, one for upholstery and one for carpets, not sure if they are different though.

4. Yes, useful.

5. smelled for maybe a day then nothing once dry.

6. 2-3 depending on if you have cloth seats.

7. I do it once a year, not sure what they recommend.

+1 to using the auto scotch guard. i take my cars to lots of river/camping trips and they get pretty dirty. with the scotch guard, it seems to clean up very easily though.
