Having had an Apexi Noir catback on my 97, I can attest to the volume and sound of an HFC, stock headers and nearly open exhaust. It's neat, for a while, but irritating under many of the most common driving situations.

Default don't do it

I cut the stock muffler off of my 97 Legacy and while it sounded kinda cool, I couldn't stand driving around because the drone was just overpowering. Eventually I put on a 3A racing muffler (known as a "fart can" here in the pacific northwest), and while it did quiet it down a bit, it was still way too droney. I could barely hear my girlfriend talking in the passenger seat.

Also, you will lose A LOT of low end torque with no muffler, so don't expect to be able to race anything off the line.

When you do eventually get another muffler on there, I would have a shop go through the exhaust system and see if it's rubbing the frame anywhere along the pipe, and if it is, pull it away from the frame, because that will eliminate most if not all of the drone from louder exhaust.

I think the best thing to do would just be to wait until you have everything you need, and just swap the stock muffler, instead of drive around with it off. You do get cops' attention too, even though I never was pulled over, I could see the looks on some of their faces :P

The day after I got mine, a flange gave out and I had nothing after the cat. It had a nice rumble, but way too loud and obnoxious. I didn't get pulled over either...but I received just enough dirty looks to make me go home and replace the flange and gasket.

Yeah fellas, I went with a custom 2.5 cat back and a magnaflow muffler. Deleted 3rd cat and resonator. Sounds good but im still wanting it to be a little louder and deeper
