Default Outback Strut Hat/Mount Question

I see a lot of FAQ's on suspension swaps, but none about strut hats alone. I googled for a while, and finally figured I'd post here.

My wife has a 1998 Legacy Outback Limited. I purchased new struts, but when looking at the hats on the car, they're all pretty rusty. I'm an unemployed student at the moment, so I balk at the thought of 150-ish to buy new hats, but have seen several people selling 01, 04-ish WRX strut hat sets, particularly Mevotech for 25 a pair.

Are they compatable with the Outback struts and springs? Or would I have to do complete swaps?

Pretty sure any Impreza tophat through at least '07 will bolt on to the strut and car body. Since the bottom of the tophat is flat where the bearing is located, as long as you keep everything from the spring up it should work. There are bearings in there, so if they look crusty changing them would seem to be a smart move...

From experience I can tell you 02 wrx wagon top hats work. You will have to switch the right and left rear. The bolt pattern for the wrx is backwards from ours.
