Default APEX SPEC C - ECU monitoring and diagnostic tool

Region: NY

Car: 06 STI

Mods:

Fully built motor w/ turbo tuff rods and CP 9.5:1 pistons
Fuel is E85
272 BC cams
AMR T60R Turbo
GTSpec Headers
invida turbo back N1 exhaust w/catted down pipe
JDM Spec C heads ported and polished
Five0 1000cc injectors
AccessPort

Goal:

I was looking for a solution to monitor my engine at all times because of some recent issues and I needed to see many parameters all at once over the course of many days. It was not very feasible for me to hook up a laptop ever time I wanted to drive the car and the AccessPort logs about as well as my old aunt tess getting out of bed in the morning. So I needed to find a better solution. I found that solution in the APEX Spec C Monitor.

Additionally, Being heavily modified, I always like to be informed of what is going on with my car at all times. I wanted something that would look OEM. Multiple gauges are nice but that doesnt give you what the ECU is receiving as input. I would also like to log now and thenand this seemed to fit the bill.

Enter the APEX SPEC C - ECU monitoring and diagnostic tool...

Installation:

Installation was fairly simple. Just a few wires and it works. Mounting of the display is completely at your discretion but it is recommended you use the clock pod which is what I chose. Of course this left no place for me to put my gauges but I improvised as you can see...

Features I know of:

- Fast/Direct SSM
- Clock
- MPG, average, peak value
- Wideband support
- SD micro SD logging
- IAM, learning and knock information
- Customizeable screen
- Firmware upgradeable
- View and reset DTC codes
- etc..

Day to day usage:

Operation is a breeze... It uses the cruise control stalk to navigate through the various screens and menus and the defroster button to execute.

This device is proving to be very useful from day to day. It has helped me pinpoint some issues like stubborn knock in one particular area of the tune and has helped to dial in my tip-in enrichment. My favorite display is "Street Mode 2" which is shown in the picture above. It displays the current gear position which had proven itself to be very useful for retards like me who misshift during high pressure situations. I'm often confused about what gear I’m in and I always down shift when I should be up shifting . Not any more

Conclusion:

I have no idea how I ever got along with out this... It has saved me hours of time and effort and was well worth the money I paid. If anyone is interested in this you should PM me either here on NASIOC or over here and I will give you details.

That is really awesome. I tried to Google for more info but couldn't find much. Do you have any links with more info or a place to buy?

Does it work on newer Subaru's as well?

I don't want to bug you over PM... would just like more info.

Thanks!

Thanks for a good write up on a useful tool. I've been contemplating a dumb carputer just to have integrated looking ecu monitoring system. But most of those options suck. This is just what Ive been looking for. There are other scan gauges out there but none that look so Subaru specific. Good find, only problem with your write up is there is no pricing and availability info. So how much and were do we get one?

So this is one of a small custom run of these(maybe 10 total) that may be released but not on a public level. If it is something that may be had for under 300 bucks I'm in, if not I'm going with a Iconia w500 tablet for 400 and use it for more than just in the car data monitoring.

Really cool that you got one though. Apex would sell a ton of them if they wanted too.

It works on any Subaru but with the GR and GV you don't have the option of mounting it in the clock pod. You would have to find a place to mount it. This is a Subaru Centric device. Won't work on any other car.

it is a low volume production from what I understand and this seems to be the website or at least a place you can get some contact info: http://www.apex-motoring.com/ApexSpecC/

Yes you are correct... Currently there is only a limited production run to the best of my knowledge. I am not entirely sure of future plans but I would hope that they will consider stepping up production if interest is great. The support I had from the guy is top notched. That's maybe why he wanted to keep it low volume and to be able to provide outstanding support.

I believe they have plans to have control functions like IC Spray activation based on manifold pressure. I can't wait for that firmware to be ready

Why do you think it couldn't be mounted in clock pod? I realize it would be harder to get it in there, but I figured you could drop the current one down, leaving it plugged in for the air bag stuff, and put this one in its place. Maybe I'll do some measuring and compare the size of my pod opening to the one on the GD.

I run this monitering system in my 04 STi. And it is simply amazing. Easy to use, great for getting the info you want out of your ECU right in front of your face. Being able to remove SD card and go straight to your laptop is great. Car is going to Sebring this spring and i can not wait to see the info i get off the track. Great product

So, I'm next !

Having dealt with Martin a few years back regarding Subaru matters, we have kept in touch over the years and ended up selling my defi's to replace with the Spec C unit.

I'm the occasional weekend track enthusiast, and like to have an idea of what's going on in the ecu.

The display fits like it's stock. Installing is a breeze, and I guess you could mount anywhere you could fit a single-din radio. Operating is easy, and because I have a 16bit ecu, Martin wired a pair of toggle switches.

We have adapted it to Speed density, ( carberry rom ), and 16 bit ecms.

Loving the fact that I don't need guages, that it's engineered locally, and built tough for the occasionnal lapping sessions. The ride will get bumpy.

There is nothing like this out there than can be so cleanly installed, works so well with our cars, and has that much support from the manufacturer.

Give this guy a call, and stop pumping thousands of $$$ for guages. Ever find a guage for wgdc ?

Its for 32 bit Ecu's and costs around 450 dollars. Just got the email from the gentleman today regarding it. So I know what I'm saving my pennies for!!!
