Default 3M ScotchCal Paint Protection Film

A lot of people in the forums have been complaining about paint chips, scratches, and generally how thin/weak the paint application is on the Subaru WRX. I just ordered an MY2003 and am trying to decide if there is anything I can do to protect the paint against this normal wear and tear.

I recently read an issue of Sport Compact Car. Their Subaru WRX Project Car on loan from Subaru of America was auto detailed to protect against stone chips and road debris. This paint protection film is known by several names. SCC called it ClearShield, some call it StoneGuard or SheerMask. However all of them order this stuff in roles from 3M and it is called 3M ScotchCal Paint Protection Film.

I am wondering if anybody in the forum has used this and recommends it. SCC car used it because most of their WRX testing is done off-road and they have to return the loaner to SOA after they finish having their fun!

Any thoughts, help, or recommendations would be much appreciated!!

Thanks in advance.

This was the first thing I did when I bought the car. I saw it work wonders on my brother's old car. There's a guy in Toronto that travels around and puts the stuff on. I put it on the front, rear 1/4 panel behind mirror, hood scoop lip. If you're going off road you'll need mud flaps or the 3M stuff on the doors - trust me.

They have different thicknesses too. I put the thicker stuff on my headlights. Works great. Oh yeah, do the door edges, too.

I have it on my hood and front within one week of getting my car. So far so good, however I drive out on the hightway everyday. So I already got a dent on my hood from a large rock and it acutually rip a hole in my 3m. I think the 3m stuff works pretty good in the city where not going 120km/h. I would recommend it.
