Default Nissan Working on Mini-Z to target FR-S/BRZ

All-New Compact Turbo Coupe Promises Affordable Performance

Quote:
On the heels of Nissan's recent motorsport successes -- a factory-backed GT-R placed first in class at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring and the radical DeltaWing stole the show at the 24 Hours of Le Mans -- comes news that executives have finally given the green light for a compact sports car known in house as the "Mini-Z." It's not a new rear-drive Silvia/240SX -- that project was cancelled in late 2008 during the financial crisis. Instead, it's a compact, front-drive-based sports car that will be aimed squarely at the Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ.

Plans for such a car were first revealed at last year's Shanghai auto show in the form of the Compact Sports Concept. The company spiel called it a unique sports car for drivers in emerging markets leading active lifestyles with an interest in motorsport, but we can expect to see it in established markets as well. As you can see in this rendering that depicts what the car may turn out to be, it has morphed from a sporty hatch into an aggressive coupe. There is also word that there will be an AWD version to go with the base FWD variant, based on the Juke's all-mode 4x4 i-system with torque vectoring.

Though Nissan didn't reveal the concept's powertrain in Shanghai, we've learned it was fitted with the 190-hp, 1.6-liter turbo-four from the Nissan Juke that also served as base for the engine in the DeltaWing. Though the engine gives up some power to the 200-hp flat-four in the Toyobaru, it's said to have a wider torque band with stronger mid-range and top-end response.

China is thought to be the car's main market, but Japan and some European countries are destined to receive small batches as well, with the U.S. still under consideration. Price-wise, the Nissan is expected to undercut the Toyota and Subaru by as much as 10 percent, carrying a sticker price somewhere below $22,000. Nissan will be able to cut production costs and weight by incorporating the current Juke's platform and turbo powertrain. Another major difference will be design. The Mini-Z coupe is expected to follow in the Juke's footsteps and employ some unique lines, eschewing the traditional sports car proportions of the Toyobaru. One insider says the Nissan will be close in size to the Honda CR-Z.

The project was conceived as a joint Japan-China endeavor, with Japan taking the R&D initiative while China worked on design and data assembly, according to a source close to Nissan. It has since been approved by all the relevant departments inside Nissan's HQ, and, according to our source, is well into the development cycle with a debut possible as early as late 2013

this car would be laughed at if it came out as a FWD to compete with a RWD sport coupe.

They're just trying to get some of the BRZ spotlight. If Nissan really wanted to take a serious run at the BRZ, their best bet would be to create a 250Z.

Either they bring a new silvia that has some aesthetics of the older models or they make a REAL mini Z that has typical Z car characteristics.

This is just a bad joke.

A smaller/more sporty Juke would be great, but calling it a "mini Z" and saying it'll compete with the Toyobaru twins is just silly without RWD.

^If it has an AWD option it might best them......probably not, but a small, affordable, AWD, turbo coupe would be an interesting option to have in the marketplace.

I agree that with AWD it will be quite a compelling car (I really like the Juke's AWD system), but it still isn't a Mini Z.

Considering how they market the Altima Coupe, I won't be surprised when this ends up a lame-duck FWD car.

This could be a modern Sentra SE-R and/or Pulsar GTi-R successor. But to call it a BRZ competitor is rediculous.

Be careful.

I've been banned for saying that in the past.

But I wholeheartedly agree, and will at least consider any entry into the market, regardless of brand.

However, I have a distinct feeling that it will basically be a lower ride height, lower roofline, cliché-sporty-styling version of the AWD turbo Juke drivetrain... probably the same Sentra-based chassis family that the Juke likely rides on.

The other rumor is that Z itself will get smaller, and compete directly with BRZ/FRS as a RWD coupe... but losing 6-cylinder count would be a mistake IMHO, even if it goes to a DFI turbo 4. A 6, especially an inline 6, still has a sweet song that would be lost.

Update and bring back the RB26 with DFI and natural aspiration, or otherwise maybe a VR6-like narrow splay, single-head engine that is shorter length than a truly inline 6.
with a manual or less-expensive dual-clutch rear transaxle, to bear familiarity to the larger and much more expensive AWD GT-R... That would offer a couple of compelling points over the BRZ/FR-S.

250-270hp from a naturally aspirated direct-injected 6-cylinder, with 50-50 or even slight rearward weight bias of a transaxle RWD car... a bit more lithe than the current 370Z, and 2900-3000lbs curb weight... BRZ doesn't match that except for under-cutting both the weight, but with less power.

And a Z might have rationale to go 2-seat only, more like S2000 and Miata, and the original 240Z. If it is 2+2, it really should be called S or SX, rather than Z or ZX.

Oh, don't worry... We're keeping an eye on SilverSubaab to make sure he doesn't break the quota of mentioning it more than once a month.

Funny... everybody lambasts me and criticizes me... and completely mis-interprets my opinions. Opinions aren't wrong information.

Nobody disproves my actual points.

Name ONE instance of wrong information that I have put forward, that I haven't contritely admitted when the information showed that I was incorrect.

You can't, because there isn't.

I never post gibberish. If you can't, or more likely just won't read, that isn't my problem, that is a YOU problem. You can ignore me all you wish. You don't have grounds to attack my character.

There are forum rules against disparaging other members. "you are stupid" is an ad-hominem attack and a judgement on my character. You don't know me, if even you know what ad hominem means. It is not the same thing as criticizing. You didn't say "you made a stupid statement."

Regardless of what you think I write, I try very hard not to attack people's character, and I always apologize when a very rare instance slips out.

I'd rather be thought of wrongly, than actually be mean to other people wrongly.

It's cool, Hip. You're not the only one. You should see how people react to Celery GT-5 elsewhere, especially in the BRZ Forum.

It's just News & Rumor. I don't condone name-calling, though. There's probably an "Evo Driver" joke in there somewhere as a retaliation.

Totally agree with Godmal, especially about Uncle Scotty. He's like the EXACT opposite of you in all the ways I despise. Just mentioning him will probably summon him here. He probably even searches for his own name to see when people are talking about him... <(^.^)>

You're a smart guy, I enjoy talking with you. I don't understand why every time someone calls you on this, you get mad and flip it into "people don't want to discuss my points/are attacking my character".

Seriously man, the reason you were banned, if it wasn't plainly obvious, isn't because you said that. It's that you used to say it in like every thread. Any thread involving a coupe, you'd bring it up. It didn't really bother me at first, but then in one sedan thread one time you said something to the effect of "wouldn't this be great if it had two less doors... and AWD... and a turbo..." and from then on I was just like, "really guy?". So after awhile other members started asking you to cut it out and you still kept doing it. Eventually a mod stepped in and slapped you on the wrist.

It's not because you don't have a point, it's because everyone who even occasionally swoops into this section of the forum has either already agreed or debated with you about it and there's nothing left to talk about.

Can't you go to the appropriate section of the forum and create "HipToBeSquare's Awesome Thread Of Wouldn't It Be Cool If Subaru Made An Affordable Turbo or H6 AWD Coupe"? It would be great because it would set you up for "The Thread Of HipToBeSquare Redeemed! Subaru Gloriously Announces Turbo AWD Coupe!!!"

Again, I enjoy talking to you, and you know I'm telling you the truth because if I wasn't, you'd have been on my Ignore list like 2 years ago. You're smart enough to learn from your mistakes, and you're damn sure smart enough to know better than to snipe at the mods like this:

Who ever did it got it right. That isn't a redesign of an '80 S-er, it is a pretty well done '60s 510.

I don't always agree wit Hip, but somethings he says, over and over( ), I heartily agree with, except the six cylinder thing...

As has been said before, the problem was that you would spew the same wall of text in every thread in which you posted. You have been too verbose, and too repetitive.

You've been better lately, but some of your posts are getting long-winded again. I usually only poke at you when you're wrong, or un-informed.

Just keep your posts brief, quit talking about your dream car/SVX-replacement/Impreza-Forester-BRZ mashup, stay on-topic, and you'll be fine.
