Default NA - Running rich brah

With my most recent tune, I found that my car likes fairly rich fuel ratios for a knock free run. sometimes it goes as rich as 12:1 if it's hot outside, but it's mostly around 12.3:1. Timing goes all in at 2800 RPM at about 20* then increments by a bit near peak power.



This map causes a strong smell in cabin if windows are open and backfires when shifting under WOT. Stock it was tuned at 13.4-12.8:1 but it could handle only pathetic amounts of timing. My timing is about 5-8* higher now than when stock. I pretty much reach full advance at 2800 RPM and keep it there until 5000 RPM with a bit of gain thereafter. I have a lot of people telling me that I run too rich and should lean it out and back off on timing, however I don't want to lose responsiveness and power because this means retarding 6-8* of timing again. it seems like the tolerance for timing falls dramatically any leaner than what i am now. Is it ok to run this rich? 12.3:1 is the fastest flamefront speed if i'm not mistaken and so I shouldn't be losing too much power?

AFR's around 12 are considered (very) rich? i was worried that was too lean.
I'm finding I'm getting best performance at 12.8-12.5 before the AVLS kick in and 12.4-12.2 after. then 11.9 once I hit 5800+. and lots of timing, 28 total at red line. my car is also piping like crazy off throttle.
I'm still working on my latency tables too, what a bitch those are.
