Ok, dont let the name fool you I am not here to talk about which car can take what in the 1/4. I have driven a '70 bug since high school and am looking into purchasing a wrx and this site is exactly what I needed for information on upgrades.
Anyway....my question. Everyone is talking about big power (~300+ crank) and slipping the clutch so as not to break anything durring hard launches but no one talks about an upgraded clutch. Is this just too simple a question because a "grippier" clutch would just break more things? thankks Eric

There isn't a car on the market that is truely made for drag racing. Eventually things are going to break but
I have over 100 runs down the drag strip in my WRX. Each run with a 5000 rpm drop clutch launch (1.73-1.83 60' times) with 17'' wheels. I'm still on the stock clutch and my tranny is still doing fine. This is also with a Stage 4. 300+ hp WRX. I went through 2 trannies in less than a year drag racing my 99z28 so I would say the WRX is built pretty well. HP/Torque breaks parts thats a fact. If you want to play your going to have to pay. Some just get luckier than others. Case in point. My tranny is doing fine after 100 races, while I know a guy with a stock WRX that never even race his car and he has had tranny troubles? Go figure. |

How much did going to 17 inch wheels affect your 1/4 mile?

Thats why I hate it when people blame their wheels for slow times. Yes they may slow you down a tenth or two but you can still run good numbers with aftermarket heavier wheels. Mine weight 22lbs each. Thats pretty heavy. I ran 8.18 in the 1/8 mile in 90 degree heat (Stage 4 setup) , with these 17'' wheels. |

I'd like to hear some recs too...
I am making enough power to smoke both my old ACT clutch and my brand new old Exedy racing clutch if I try to slip it at very high revs. Both clutches grab fine if I rev it up at 5,500rpm and drop the clutch to get the tires to break loose. The revs drop no lower than 3,500 rpm when she grips, and she runs off like a scalded cat! There was NO slip with either clutch at ANY other time, only with slipping on high rev launches. I am running a VF22 at 15 psi with full 3" twindump catless turboback on approx 9.4:1 compression 2.5L motor, and enough fuel for 400+ HP if the VF22 could do that much (more like 375hp max). I suspect my 4.4psi wastegate spring is leaking and would consider a stronger spring for more boost, but not until I finish my 8.5:1 motor. I get 11psi in first gear, 13 psi in second gear, and 15 psi in third through fifth with the boost contoller turned all the way up. This with stock ECU and 6 psi of timing retard over 5,000rpm, and 2 extra fuel injectors. What is one step above the ACT and Exedy that will handle 400+ ftlbs of torque at the flywheel and still be streetable? i.e. I'd like to avoid a 3 puck copper that grabs too fast.
