Default Winter tire/rim combo (help a noobie out)

First let me say I'm sorry for posting this. I think it should be a question that's always been answered several times, but no matter how much I hunt & peck with google I can't find a clear cut answer.

I'm looking at getting a different set of wheels for winter. I did learn the smallest rim size I can go with to clear the calipers is 17". I'm also looking for a tire that isn't quite as wide as the factory tire. The part of Indiana I live in is kind of odd. Some winters we get hammered with snow, and other times we hardly get any. It should be mentioned as well I'm not looking at breaking the bank. I thought about getting something off the forums. What should I be looking for?

I ramble too much. Any recommendations on what rim/tire I should go with for my STI in order to meet my needs? I'm hopeless, but at least I want to learn.

Tirerack. Use that to help with the research. Don't use google to do the search. Use the search button on here and just type in winter tire. There are several long threads with lots of wheel options listed for the 2008+ STI. Heck, the Tirerack facility is practically in your yard there.

Hey! Thanks! I honestly drive past that place, but didn't know it was their HQ.

Also thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

EDIT: I have SB listed as my location. It's close to me. Like 1/2 an hour away. I just wanted a little more direction on where to go. I've been on their website before, and checked it all out.

Okay. Here's my problem after using tireracks web site. I know what rubber I want, but I can't get their website to show any 17" rims that will fit my vehicle. Do they not offer any, or am I just really, really stupid?
