Default ZNation (SyFy)

Quote:
Syfy Joins the Zombie Apocalypse With Z Nation

Sep 12, 2014 07:00 AM ET
by Michael Logan

Who'd be nuts enough to compete with The Walking Dead by launching yet another series about a zombie apocalypse? Only the folks who brought us Sharknado! The new Syfy series Z Nation— set three years after the U.S. president and millions of others have been killed by zombies — stars Harold Perrineau (Lost), Tom Everett Scott (Southland), and DJ Qualls (Supernatural) as a group of funky heroes trying to transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab will test his blood and, hopefully, create a vaccine. Did we mention it's a laugh riot?

"We're determined to put the fun back in zombies," says executive producer Karl Schaefer. "The Walking Dead is a fantastic show, but it has a very narrow, straight-forward vision of what it means to have a zombie problem. We take a much more M*A*S*H-like approach, using black humor as a great survival skill. Hey, if you're in a zombie apocalypse and can't see the humor, you might as well curl up and wait to die."

Where The Walking Dead zigs, Z Nation zags. "We have a much broader sense of zombies and what they're capable of," notes Schaefer. "We have fast zombies, slow zombies, underwater zombies, animal zombies, even baby zombies. And their behavior will evolve as the series does." Another notable difference: While the AMC hit is all about hunkering down in isolation and avoiding "walkers" at all costs, the Z Nation guerrillas actually seek them out.

"Our mission is to move forward every week, going from one pocket of humanity to another," Schaefer says. "Our characters are like, 'Let's go catch us some zombie ass!' Trust me, if there's ever a real apocalypse, you'll wanna be with our guys."

Z Nation premieres Friday, Sept. 12 at 10/9c on Syfy.
Been watching this on the DVR Friday nights. It has actually been pretty entertaining. More along the Dawn of the Dead style with lots of tongue in cheek moments and cliche characters. But that's the beauty of it! And it's made by SyFy, so the cheese factor is ever present.

Anyone else enjoying this as well?

How are the FX? That makes or breaks this type of show for me....WD has great zombies.

They are surprisingly good. The zombies make up is done well, but for the gore factor there is the tell tale SyFy cgi that they like to use. It isn't overdone though. So, with going in knowing what you are getting into, it is actually very good.

This show is unapologetically campy and ridiculous. I appreciate that. I'll continue to watch.

If anything, you can check out the first few episodes online. I saw DailyMotion had the first episode loaded up. The poster may have added the all 3 episodes by now.

How timely and hip of Syfy. The zombie fad definitely isn't over and done.

Okay, the episode this past Friday was pretty great. I loved the self criticism (SyFy) that Rhonda had when they see the tornado weather coming, and she goes, "Well at least I don't see any sharks." I thought they did well to incorporate the tornado + zombies, but didn't go too overboard with it. It was just enough without getting too cheesy.

Now that TWD has started again, I absolutely love that I got Z Nation to watch Fridays, and TWD to close out the weekend on Sundays. I get a good dose of the zombie apocalypse from both ends of the scale, from tongue in cheek to full on drama.

Haven't watched, likely won't. Just in to say I can't take DJ Qualls seriously in any serious role.

Either can he, that's part of what makes him work in this one.

The fad that's been going longer than you've been alive?

That was an unexpected turn of events.

At least Murphy was awesome.

Syfy sent me a message over Facebook back when they announced that they were beginning filming there. They were talking about needing extras. I'm guessing they don't know that there's a mountain range between Mountlake Terrace and Spokane.

Bump! The show has been getting pretty great, overall. I don't want to spoil anything for those that haven't caught up. But I am surprised of decisions being made and the realization factor of not being complacent is reflected. There seems to really be no place safe.

Also, the episode with the two gun runner guys we saw in the pilot episode was pretty cool. I like that there are these side characters out there still running around in this zombie universe.

I was shocked by how dark (one scene of) the last episode was.

I stopped after the hospital episode. It was just so cringe worthy I couldn't handle it anymore. Sounds like I should stick with it?

When Murphy stole from that mother and daughter? Or the hallucinations of Simon?

Yeah, his character developed quite well. I do enjoy Murphy and his cynical view on everything. Although, I do like that he turned a corner and seems to view this group as friends now. Before, he was just used to being a prisoner/patient and the role of being used, instead of being in a situation where people actually like him for who he is. He seems to have found that. But, his transition is really taking effect. I wonder what he will be by the time they make it to California... if they make it. One thing is for sure, he is definitely handy to have around. The morgue scene was evident of that.

Funny thing about the morgue scene, I was feeling the tension of being trapped like they were. The damn zunami was no joke!!
