Default Need some advice.....

I'm looking for a winter DD (have a 00 Z28 as a summer car) and I found a 2000 2.5 RS in my area on CL. Here's the ad:

http://rochester.craigslist.org/cto/3155875801.html

As you can see, it has a possible HG issue causing overheating problems. I've done a bit of reading over the past few days and have learned that this is a Phase II motor that suffers from an external HG leak. So my questions are:

A) does an external leak cause overheating issues after initial warm up?
B) is an external leak literally that, where I should see coolant puddling under the car?
C) what would he mean by "exhaust in the coolant"? To me that sounds like an internal HG blowout where coolant should be getting in the chamber and causing white exhaust smoke and possible hydrolock (which hasn't happened since it runs per the ad), which is something I know to look for.

I'm super interested in this car and want to see if I can get it for $2k or under. It looks pretty damn clean in the pictures, and would be perfect for my snowy winters here in upstate NY. I just don't want to get myself in to something that's going to cost me more than a few hundred to get running correctly. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for upon personal inspection of the vehicle? I'm a pretty well versed car guy, but I'm by no means familiar with Subies and their own unique issues. I am fully capable of doing the HG myself so that's not an issue, I just don't want to buy the car thinking it's an HG issue when maybe it's just the water pump and I end up spending more money and doing more work than I need to. Hell I could even luck out and have it be something as simple as the thermostat even. I'm going to go check it out on Friday afternoon, so what do I need to look for exactly outside of the obvious milky/foamy/discolored coolant?

Any insight anyone can provide would be very appreciated, I'm going to call the kid today to see if I can scope it out this Friday or Saturday, and hopefully get it towed home afterwards if we can come to a deal!

Exhaust in the coolant is a blown hg, that would have to be replaced. It is probably time for a timing belt kit while you have the head off and a waterpump would also be a good idea. All that will cost you a few hundred bucks.

Well that's good to know, as I was planning around 400 for the entire job including the timing belt. Hopefully the car checks out and I'll have a new toy to play with soon!

Don't forget, you're gonna want to have the heads machined once you take them off. And make sure you get either the felpro MLS or sti mls headgaskets

Thanks for the advice, about how much does a typical machine job go for to clean them up as needed, assuming they're in good shape?

Also, is there a good HG kit out there I should look for? I know I want to go with OEM or Felpro parts, but I'm wondering if there's a good/specific kit out there I should be looking for? The kid told me he'll let it go for 1800, so as long as I can find all the parts and get the job done for under 500, I'll probably hop on it.

I wouldn't pay more than 1300...1400 tops. Talk him up on all the parts its gonna need and that it does need to be machined. Shop will be around 100. And there is a whole felpro kit with the blue MLS gaskets
