Looks like a win. 2' of fresh, temps in the low 20's and it's blue.

So I finally got my splitboard setup put together and have been itching to get out and test it. I got the perfect opportunity yesterday before heading up to my parent's place for Thanksgiving.

Stevens Pass opened earlier this week, but only opened the Brooks and Daisy chairs (the two lowest lifts). Knowing the rest of the inbounds terrain as well as I do, I figured I'd do an inbounds split mission would be the perfect way to get my first turns of the season.

Thankfully, Stevens groomed a trail from the top of Daisy over to the bottom of Tye Mill, then up to the top of Hogsback. This definitely made it easy skinning, especially for my first time. It did get a little interesting between Tye and Hogs. I decided to head up a steeper section that happened to be too steep and I got myself into a little trouble. I tried to turn around and 'ski' back down and hit a different trail up, and really got myself twisted up (I've never skied before). Made for a pretty good show for the guy working on the Tye lift below me. It was a mess. Eventually I made it back down to the lower trail that got me up to the top of Hogsback.

After 15 minutes of resting my legs I headed back down for my first turns of the season. With the low coverage and being by myself, I stuck to a mellow open run back down to the lodge and off to Thanksgiving dinner.

Overall, it was a really fun quick trip up with the splitty. I'm definitely hooked, I actually really enjoyed the skin up just being out there in the snow and enjoying the scenery. Can't wait for the next mission.

Now to the pics........

Yup, winter on Hwy 2.

American Alps.

Heading up.

Feels kinda weird at first.

Heading up the trail, looking back towards Tye Mill.

Cowboy Ridge in all her glory.

Lovin' it.

^^They're opening Kehr's and Skyline for the first time today, but from what I saw it'd still take a little time and more snow to get Hogsback and Tye up and running. If you're ok with doing a bit of hiking, you'll be able to get some goods in the Hogsback zone from Skyline.

I think I'll be heading over to Baker tomorrow with a couple buddies. Maybe Stevens on Sunday.

BTW Joel, let's get some turns together this year for once! I'll show you around Stevens if you'll play tour guide at Alpy.

I went to Crystal yesterday with some of my buddies. The conditions were awesome! It felt like a mid-season day. A lot of the lifts were open, even the Power bowl opened up in the afternoon.

Thanks for the link to this article. It is really hard to read after spending so many days in groups that were just like this one.

Here is what I wrote that day to my group of friends:

"So on the way home yesterday from my best on snow day in years, I learned of the tragedy that had unfolded at two of the other local mountains.

These fallen snow sliders were not my friends but as I see pictures and videos of them, I know they could be. You see as someone that has spent many many days on snow and in less than perfect conditions, it could have been me, or easily one of the many life long friends that I have acquired. The people that we lost were also in love with the sport and everything it brings. They were experienced, very experienced and it happened to them. About a year ago it happened to Melby, also very experienced. It does not seem fair.

So be safe, if it looks unstable, or you know the history is questionable keep it low key. Find your loved ones, give them a hug and tell them you love them. Life is too short not to.

My heart and prayers go out to the fallen's family and friends."

I had been riding out of bounds at Crystal that day with a close friend. This is what the riding looked like to us. [also in a drainage]

Be safe out there!

Josh

I'm a bit of a gear hog and have multiple pairs (I really don't know how many).

I went with these 2-3 seasons back.
http://www.backcountry.com/stoic-welder-trigger-mitt

I use the shell with a manzella liner and I'm pretty happy with them.
The palms do get a little heavy in the wet snow, but the inside stays dry.
The "cinch" on one of them also broke, but I still use them and it hasn't been an issue.

I was more of an inbounds guy last year. I don't think I even went out to elevator last year. I think with the deaths at Stevens and also reading a bit more about avys I wasn't hyped on it. The one day we were going to go, Alpy opened an hour late due to avy control and even then they only opened a quarter of the mountain. The line was super huge so we bailed and went to Central for zero lines and bottomless pow. This was also the same weekend of the avy at stevens you linked above. Someone at Alpy also died that day, though not in the sidecountry stuff. So I *could* play tourguide if you want, but you're probably looking for more BC stuff right? I've only gone beyond Elevator gate once or twice and that was with ebrake-n.

Here's the gloves I picked up last March:

They were a little bulky to start, but they packed in a bit and I really like them now.

Ah, well then, lets do it. I know of a few inbounds spots that don't see too much traffic anyway. Usually able to get a few pow lines in the afternoon.

Edit: hit submit before I was ready...

What do people think of the Union Atlas bindings? I picked up a set of these last week from REI. I think they were last year's version so a touch stiffer than the 2013 from what I've read online. they were 1/2 off so I jumped on it. They were replacing my Burton Custom/Triad frankenbindings on my Capita Ultrafear. I was playing around with setup on them and having trouble with the toe strap. Seems like when I tighten it down, it just presses on my small toe. If I adjust the strap to make it longer, I don't get as much of the pressure, but then the strap isn't set on the boot very evenly. Anyone else have toe strap problems like that? I have a similar issue on my Rome Targa bindings, but if I set the strap right when I buckle in, there's no problem. I've never had this problem with any of the burton bindings in the past. It was nice to be able to put the strap on, buckle it down, and go. Its not a huuge deal with the Rome's, but its there. I like the flex and feel of the Union bindings tweaking and flexing on the carpet. Just that toe strap. :|

Of course, I'll have to take them up to Snoqualmie for a spin to see how I really like them. I rode my nitro/rome setup over the weekend at Stevens since its more of a versatile ride for me.

oh and it feels good to be riding again. The fun thing is that my wife just assumes I'll be riding weekends until nights at Snoqualmie kick off. I was planning on doing some stuff around the house this Saturday and she had already planned on me snowboarding. She didn't know I had other things planned so I didn't say anything. really hope Snoqualmie opens up though. I'm not a fan of paying for firm icey days like last Saturday.

We got 15-20" on deck for the next 48 hours. Nothing but snow in the forecast beyond that. Think I'll be getting my first turns tomorrow.
