Slap a 2.5 block under your 2.2 heads. Instant 40+hp, much more if you do cams and other goodies.

^^^ What this guy said.

WAY cheaper than a swap. Of course 40hp will only tide you over for so long...

Tis true. I'm up near 210 bhp and it's not all that amazing, but it's a helluva lot better than the 135 bhp stock. Better fuel economy too... for some odd reason. Then again I built the engine from the ground up for $1400 and didn't have to monkey with wiring harnesses, tune, IC piping, or anything else.

Catch 22

What on earth did you do to get 210bhp out of a 2.5?

Buy it used...and local so you can inspect it and I doubt many people are willing to ship. You can rebuild it yourself and drop any goodies you want into the block

Sorry, I meant crank hp. Around 175 whp.

Heads with some work/valves, cams, thinner HGs (pulling as much CR as I can) larger injectors, phenolic spacers under the IM, full intake and exhaust, balanced internals, lightened flywheel; I'm probably forgetting something.

Long story short, it's the cheapest and easiest way to obtain near stock WRX power in a 2.2 car, but that's where you cap it off at. No way to bring out much more power unless you go full retard and go high comp pistons, piggyback, meth, etc. And at that point, you should just swap a turbo engine in.

Haha don't bother...here it is.

EL headers (TWE headers, ceramic and wrap)
Straight pipe exhaust (no cats, and make the exhaust flow as straight as possible)
Intake (hybrid or CAI)
Intake Manifold Spacers (Grimmspeed)
Bigger Injectors
LW Pulleys (Maybe even underdriven)
11:1 High Compression Pistons
TWE/Delta Cams
New Valve Springs
PNP EVERYTHING POSSIBLE (Manifolds/exhaust/heads)
Custom Tune

IF your trying to maximize on your power than:
Weight Reduction (Spare tire, interior stripping)
Lighter/Smaller Wheels/Tires

Stiffen up the drivetrain
Better Clutch
Stiff Bushings all over the place

I suggest reading this awesome thread on rs25, its an age old thread over here where people debate the potential power with only bolt ons but they provide much more information.

Thank you for the thread you posted. Seems when it comes to NA every thread has the same info or argument on how to gain or lose HP when altering factory equipment lol.

Personally I think with a full exhaust/intake/LW Pulleys and some internal work like cams and you will be very happy. Just the exhaust alone will make you grin when you hear that n/a rumble. (n/a engine is louder than a boosted engine as the turbo silences the exhaust a little)

I/H/E and cams are the single best bang for the buck, and are relatively easy to do. I scored a pair of 2.5 engines for $150, so that's why I went the route I did, however it was more work than intended.

I make more than enough power for what I use my car for, and more than what I make now would be superfluous; I have a bike to go really ridiculously fast on.

Being NA, it's a dream to drive off road and pitch sideways, easy to crawl around in the rocky areas near the river that I fish/kayak, and the power rolls in smooth for sketchy driving like deep snow or sand.
