Default 2002 2.5 RS EJ205 Swap

Hey everyone!

I am looking to do a WRX swap (EJ205) into my 2002 Impreza 2.5 RS. I appreciate all of the advice to "just buy a WRX, as it's not worth the cost", but I have made up my mind, and am just looking for answers. I know there are plenty of write-ups out there, and I have looked at them all who knows how many times. I just want to verify one more time, as most write-ups are for GC8's.

My buddy and I can do all the mechanical aspects of the swap no problem.

Does the WRX engine (everything included) have to be from a bugeye, or will any 02-05 engine work okay?
Also, are the harnesses 02-05 plug and play?

I'm thinking if I just pull the wiring and put the new one in since they will be the same year, they should just plug into things like the gauges, and temp control, etc.... And all I should have to do is run the new harness and ecu, and change a thing or two like the fuel pump? Are my assumptions correct? Or is merging necessary?

Basically, would it be any easier for me to get an 02/03 harness over an 04-05, and what is involved in merging?

Thanks for your time, and hope you can help!

If you can get a harness and ECU that matches the engine it would be easiest to do it that way. The best way to do it would be to get a whole '02 drive train and wiring harness (including the fuel pump and the controller) and just swap it all in. No merging would be needed at that point. You would basically have an '02 WRX instead of a '02 RS
