Default '12 Impreza 5 Door Spoiler Causing More Dust Build Up

I washed my 2012 Impreza 5 door today and when it was finally spotless and free of dust I took it out for a drive to the grocery store which is a two mile round trip. Got back and noticed the rear window was coated in a fine layer of dust. No where else had any dust build up on the car.

I have the roof spoiler installed and wondering if anyone has the same annoyance of dust build up. I guess the spoiler is actually working since it's there to "spoil" the air in the back creating less drag allowing the dust to collect on the rear window versus a wing which applies more down force for more traction.

In my experience this seems to be the case for all hatchbacks, the rear portion of the car (window, bumper, trunk hatch) just gets dirty really fast. I'm not sure of the practicality of the wing/spoiler on the Impreza, I would think its more for aesthetics than anything and it does look nice.

OIC... I had the spoiler installed a month after I got the car (supply issues) and I never noticed the buildup before I had the spoiler. At least I know it a hatchback thing

Agreed, I don't believe it is just a spoiler issue. All hatchbacks have a rear wiper essentially for this reason (90% of sedans dont I'd say in comparison). The short portion of car after the rear wheels in comparison to a sedan's causes the air from under the car to swirl up and dump the dirt on the rear window. If you drive on a dirt road some time you can watch it happen. Enjoy the car, I love mine!

I don't have a spoiler and the exact same thing happened to me. Dust builds up all over the back very quickly.

I actually remember reading an article once about this. I can't find it or remember it well enough but I believe it has to do with air flow over the car and pressures. As the air flows over the car, some flows back against the hatch and dust follows the air and thus the hatch gets dirty quick.

I read that article like 15,000 years ago. Maybe someone else will have read it and remember.

I have only had one hatchback that actually cleaned the rear window with the airflow...and that was my 04 Chevy Malibu Maxx.....in 05 they added a spoiler on the leading edge of the roof...and then had to add a wiper because of the water buildup....

Limited HB here....and when driving in the rain you really notice how quickly the rear window clouds over......same effect with the dust collection......my Maxx...was swept completely clear with its design.....

Rear spoiler look far outweighs this problem though, agreed?

Agreed! The roof spoiler makes the 5 door look so much better.

Yeah when I see a 5-door without the spoiler the back looks so bare.

Default Not for me...

I actually thought the rear spoiler looked too gaudy for me. Without it, the rear just seemed sleeker to me, more my style.

Who knows, maybe when I actually see one with the spoiler in the person I'll decide I like it.

I have the spoiler on mine, the back seems so bare and empty without it. So each to their own.

just a data point...

i washed my car for the first time today and in fact tried to be pretty liberal in getting water at the windows with my spray gun. i dried the car, then waxed it, and then wiped the car down with a damp clothe. so in a few hours had passed. before cleaning the windows, i rolled down the front windows. there was only a smidge of moisture there. no different than i would have had in my prior cars.

I get small droplets of moisture all across my window when I bring it up and down after washing my car. Is that normal?

Default 5-door rear window dust accumulation

Interesting; have same annoying problem with my '13 WRX 5 door; rear window gathers dust and dirt like a magnet. Traded my '03 WRX 5-door on it, which had a spoiler above AND below the rear window. Almost NEVER even had to use the wiper! The rear wheels are now closer to the back of the car (compared to the older body style), but suspect the spoiler under the window made the real difference. Unfortunately, this is no longer an option; I've looked.

Same car, similar problem. The spoiler obviously works because it's effectively sandblasted in under a year, while even the leading edge of the bumper isn't sandblasted. It's really rough when you feel the spoiler, and it's not in need of a clay bar.

No, as Brian stated in post #4 above, the dirt isn't from the air that flows over the roof of the car. The dirt is from the air that flows under the car, and as with all hatchbacks, curls up and then deposits road dirt on the hatch.

So it has nothing to do with your spoiler. It's common to all hatchback designs.
