Default How to: Install wrx rear sway bar on a 2.5i 08+

Here a tutorial about how to install a rear sway bar on a 2008+ Subaru Impreza.

I used a sway bar from a 2011 WRX which is 16mm thickness. You can use one from a 2008 to 2011.
2008 -> 15mm
2009-2011 -> 16mm

First lets start with the hardware that you need. Go buy them at a dealer:
2x Bracket -> 20466FG000
4x Bracket bolt -> 010108200
2x Bushing -> 20464FG000
2x Endlink -> 20470FG000
2x Endlink Nut -> 902370046
2x Bottom Bolt for Endlink -> 901000221 & Nut -> 902350001 (or you can use a M10x90mm or 3/8- 3"1/2 with the nut)
You can use washer on the bolt if you want like i did



Once you have all of the hardware needed,

1. Grease the bushing and the bar (they goes outside the metal sleeve)
2. Jack the rear of the car and secure it with Jack stand.
3. Bolt the endlink on the control arm
4. Slide the bar under it. The small curve on the bar goes upward and the bushing goes in the rear of the subframe bracket (You should see it). On a sedan with double exhaust it may be a little harder to slide it in.
5. Install the bracket and tight them in place
6. Bolt the endlink to the sway bar (Do not tight the bolt)
7. Put the car on the ground
8. Tight the endlink nut with wrench and Hex key

That how it should look like
Left side

Right side


And go for a ride!

For me its day and night, there is no more rebound from the rear suspension and its more stiffer! All the hardware (Except the bar) cost me around 30$.

Looks great! Those parts look familiar =) I'm glad you're enjoying them!

It may be easier for you guys to simply go on ramps. That way the suspension is already loaded so you can untighten/retighten bolts much easier.

Thanks for the write up. I don't have ramps, so I will probably let my mechanic just do it anyway. Any idea how much they should charge since it's just about 10-15 minute install?

Or should I save the labor costs, buy the ramps now and be proactive for future DIYs?

a friend and I did his rear sway bar without any ramps, granted we both are pretty lean guys. if your car isnt lowered, and you're on the smaller end of the body size scale, this can be done with the car on the ground.

I did the same thing. It take me about 30 min to do it.

I have an 08 STi bar (18 mm) on my 08 Impreza. Planning on upgrading soon and will be selling the bar then. If anyone is interested I will let you know when it goes up for sale.

That looks like it is for an upgrade to a previous sway bar. If your putting it in the 2.5i without one in it already.. You'll need the bar, bushing.. Like the Amazon has.. Plus endlinks, the end link brackets and bolts

I'm fairly sure that the OEM bushes do not require grease. Mine did not have grease from the factory. It will only serve to trap contaminants.

Also did you notice that the bushes for the 16mm bar have the diameter symbol followed by '15mm', meaning it has a 15mm hole. I checked a factory 16mm bar and bush and they were the same.

Google would be your best bet.
It should be noted that FRONT sway bars between Naturally Aspirated and Turbo model Imprezas are not interchangeable though. Atleast for the 08+ models.

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, but I just bought a used rear sti sway bar. However the tiny little boots on the stock endlinks are both leaking some grease, is this a problem to worry about?

Well i guess thats your call... You could always try them and see how they hold up... A new set of endlinks is not very expensive if you go oem... Might be worth it to just get new ones now rather than the near future when your getting all kinds of clunking sounds from the rear end ha

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't aware that those little boots could cause any issues. With my old '00 forester the end links had no boots they were just a solid piece with hardly any play; although I'm sure the suspension is a bit more significant in the Impreza.

sublinux,

you said all the hardware except the bar cost you $30. I was wondering where you got your hardware from. All of the online dealerships I have been on come out to about $130 for the list of hardware minus the bar. If I could save $100 that would be nice, please let me know!

bracket bolts (subaru calls them flange bolts) - dealership - $5/each = $20
endlink nuts - dealership - $2/each = $4
bottom bolt (x2) and nut (x2) - home depot - $5 total

My cost - $164 (would go down if you were smart and didn't pay the dealer $5 per flange bolt like I did, can get at home depot for much less)

Also, I was sketched out by the Febest brand end links from Amazon but they turned out to be pretty stout and I figured for $17 it was a no brainer to at least try them.
