Unusual manufacturing defect. Should have been caught at many different levels. Any repair to it at this point (welding) and the area will be subject to corrosion. I cannot exactly tell from your posts but; you found or were aware of it while the car was still at the dealer but the paperwork had already been completed? If it was found (dealer personnel were made aware) and was still there at the dealer, whether the paperwork was done or not they should have not allowed you to take the car with a "known structural manufacturing defect". Not saying the car would explode but certainly TOYOTA would not condone it. Your money, your decision, in the end you must be satisfied. Good luck.

Toyota called me an hour or so ago. They told me that their decision/ my options are in the mail and that I should see them in the next few days. I asked for a general idea of what my options would be and they told me Vehicle Replacement, or Vehicle Repair, but that all of the details were in the letter and to go ahead and call them once I get it and make a decision.

Great news!

are you going to post the detailed options just for kicks? I'm curious what compensation they would provide on top of vehicle repair.. though I'd choose replacement as well.

glad it appears to have worked out.

Likely because it is a legally binding formal offer and they don't want the opportunity for some CSR to add-lib any thing while playing the telephone game. Not that uncommon.

Not a surprise at all and sadly quite typical from the Sales dept. Get him in the car, not lose the sale and let someone else have to worry about it later and record the sale.

Still silly issue that shouldn't have happened in the first place.

Half their fault, half yours.

I was referring to the post saying it was half my fault that I ended up with this car. I would think it is the fault of the people who are paid to inspect/ quality assurance in the factory, not mine. I was just lucky to find this when I did.

Anyway, I am happy that Toyota has been a really great company to work with thus far. I am sure Subaru would have been the same as well.

Good deal, I'm definitely interested to see the other details such as if they're going to cover another clear bra install on the new car.

I really appreciate the support and understanding here. I am guessing I will see a letter tomorrow or the next day. California shipping to Utah is around 2 business days, but I don't know how Saturdays affect the delivery time. I will update everyone as I know more.

It's a shame that part wasn't noticed at the factory, maybe that entire process is automated and the assembler didn't notice it.. they generally go braindead doing the same thing over and over in a shift.

Toyota/subaru won't be hurting over the loss of the car, I think. I would imagine there's some sort of insurance in place to cover the incident... What sucks is that there was no QA to actually look things over.. and so much time/effort/money was spent sending that car overseas from japan. But I guess when you got like 10000 parts, it's hard to catch everything.

Poor thing.. never got a chance... they'll probably scrap it.

Not sure if they'll make you sign an NDA, but I wonder if it would be legal to post the VIN publicly so that people will know if they get this car as a repair?

I am sure any repair will have a new coating; and that it will be just fine.

^^^Which I wouldn't mind. Still get a warranty. THAT isn't that bad of a thing to me IF it was fixed. Now, getting it that way new like the OP did? I would be upset also, but I would probably just let them fix it and get some free stuff with it. Especially a free full extended warranty like we did with a customer who bought an Outback we fixed at our dealership.

no I don't think I would mind either if the fix is properly done and documented, if that car is sold again, I hope it's not for a new price though.

A proper repair will not corrode.
