Not long after a few images leaked onto the web, Land Rover has officially pulled the wraps off of its larger, lighter 2013 Range Rover. We still don't know if we love the new design – some of our staffers stating that it looks a bit Ford Flex-ish to us – but one thing's for sure, that new body sheds a whole mess of pounds compared to the current model.

How many pounds, you ask? According to the automaker's first batch of press materials, a U.S.-spec 2013 Range Rover is roughly 700 pounds lighter than a similarly equipped outgoing model. That's damn impressive, and it's all thanks to an all-aluminum unibody structure. Additionally, new aluminum chassis structures are found at both the front and rear, as well as a re-engineered four-corner air suspension. Land Rover says that this new suspension allows the Range Rover to deliver flatter, more confident cornering prowess.

Of course, this is a Range Rover, so off-road capability is still top notch. Land Rover is introducing its next-generation Terrain Response system which automatically monitors road conditions and selects the appropriate settings based on the road (or dirt, or sand, or rock, or snow) surface.

Inside, Land Rover has added 4.7 inches of rear legroom to the 2013 Range Rover – a good thing, since our one gripe with the vehicle has always been its unusually cramped rear quarters. The automaker is also offering a two-place rear seat package for "the ultimate in personalized rear-seat luxury." Up front, there's a redesigned center stack and IP, and the whole thing looks substantially more modern than the current Range Rover. Let's just hope those buggy electronic systems have been reworked, too.

Official powertrain information hasn't been released at this time, though Land Rover does confirm that a range of V8 options will be available in the U.S., likely in the same 5.0-liter naturally aspirated and supercharged forms that we're used to. All of the engines will be mated to ZF eight-speed automatic transmissions.

We'll be seeing the 2013 Range Rover in person later this year, and North American deliveries are expected to start in December. Scroll down for the full details in Land Rover's press blast.

Nailed it! I used to work for a periodontist, and his wife was an orthodontist. She drove a silver Range, and he drove a pearl white Escalade. He at least used the space, he'd help shuttle bikes for road racing events that he raced it. But 90% of the time it was his DD.

Will need to see it in person, but it looks gawdy in the pics. I love the weight loss and 8-speed, but not the chrome spaceship look. Their biggest markets are China and India now...

Exterior looks strangely awkward. I think the front overhang looks way too long, although I don't know if it is actually longer than the current version. It might be the visual effect of that goofy headlamp shape. That screws up the overall balance and the tucked back look of the previous Ranges.

I do like the interior a lot though, it is a fitting tribute to the gals who had the looks and foresight to marry an orthodontist.

It seems that the front has more curvature than the current gen, which is very flat-faced. So the overhang looks small from that rear quarter view, but from the front quarter view at least to me the front looks visually more massive than the current gen.




Now looking at profile views,





It seems the overhang is not actually longer (which is what I guessed in my previous post), so I'm guessing it's the wrap around headlight that produce that effect.

I get that they were going for Evoque-like sleek look, but I don't think they quite pulled it off here.

I think it's fine. Unmistakably Range Rover, slightly more modern. Interior design is surprisingly clean for a luxury vehicle, so kudos for that. I think the wheels are too "lacy" looking for a "tough" SUV. Those profile pics make me think it will have even better approach & departure angles for offroad use, and probably slightly less cargo room & rear head room. I'd never buy one (for price/value/image/reliability/efficiency & other reasons) but I respect its capability for the 1% that use it to its potential.

Just checked the height in the back - old Rover is 39.5" and new one is 32.4" !!! WTF?!?! That is a huge difference - my dog can't stand up in the new one.

They've made it like the RR Sport, for better or worse. I think the latter, although I wouldn't buy or drive one anyway because of reliability and the image.

On topic to this thread is this off-road demo video. The cutaway aspect is cool. The lack of articulation demonstrated--almost but not quite to Evoque levels of suckage--is not.

So, general perception is that most Rover drivers bought the truck (or in this case had it bought for them ) as a status symbol? Not refuting it, but that's pretty sad for those who do. They are great trucks IMHO - no need to discount them simply because some idiots buy them.

Here on Long Island they're pretty much exclusively status symbols. S550 for the husband, Range Rover for the wife.
