Default Help please?! Torn down to heads- can't clear heads out!

Hello everyone,
I've tried searching and am still stuck.

I'm doing head gaskets, etc on a '93 Impreza L EJ18. I've FINALLY gotten into the head gaskets. All bolts are loose, ready to come out. Problem is the bolts are way too long and I cannot clear the chassis in order to get the bolt out of the block.

I've heard people remove the motor mount nuts and cant or lift the motor in order to clear the heads out.

I went under and found one 14mm nut per side that look like motor mounts. Didn't help. No movement when I jacked it up.

Questions:
Where are the motor mounts?
Is it safe to jack on the oil pan (with a block of wood to protect it)?
If I jack up the motor, are there any trans mounts that will be stressed/bent?

Thanks!!

Ok, I took the valve cover off and lowered the exhaust out of the way- made room to get the head off. While cleaning the head, I remembered that the hydraulic lifters are supposed to remain upright per the manual. It was upside down when I remembered that.

Any harm in that? Will they refill with oil on their own if necessary?

Thanks

I thought head gaskets were a job that most pull the engine for?

I've never tried it, but I've even heard the valve covers and spark plugs are somewhat a tight squeeze.

I do them in the car often you just remove the motor mount nuts and move the engine over to one side then move it the other way to do the other side.

That's how I do it. Even in my 98 I didn't need to loosen the motor mounts. You get used to working in these tight engine bays after a while

Yes I can still do it faster in the car on an na motor but the turbo motors have to come out.

Need to remove the pitch stop too or that will restrict your ability to move the motor around.
