I'm headed to Hawaii later this year and want to know what the car culture is like there. Any tips?

I'm here now... visiting for the weekend, found one guy, white 2015 Sedan with "NIMBU5" plates.

He said there are meets, but I don't know where they get organized.

I've seen quite a few nice subies running around.

good luck with that, you won't get past a safety inspection with more than 35% window tint or any type of suspension work unless you can find a "off the grid" inspection shop. and enjoy the potholes of H1 and the traffic.

Look on Iclub the meets sucks here. It's nothing like the mainland just like everything in Hawaii.

Don't listen to this. It couldn't be anymore wrong. Safety and recon are both easy to pass as long as your car is gtg. Safety will only allow 35% tint but other then that it's a normal safety check as almost every other state has. Also suspension is a bounce test. 1000s of people here pass everyday. We all have bags, springs, or coilovers. Traffic can be bad but I can from DC so no difference there and as far as potholes it's not H1 you have to worry about. But Kam lol they still fixing that from when Pearl Harbor was attacked lol.
As much as I hate i-club because it's so lame and no one uses it that's where all the Hawaii folks go so find that and you will see all the meets and cruises. They are pretty often.

Yeah Iclub is super lame. They all hangout for a circle jerk in parking lots of starbucks every week. It's not worth your time.

Total crap, I was just there. I tried to get recon and the inspector said per the rules that were made for cars in the 1980's, you have to physically push down on the fender and it has to travel 1 inch down and 1 inch up. that won't even happen with most oem cars on the road in this decade. Oahu is the only state in Hawaii and the US that does a stupid "bounce" test. How the **** are you testing on vehicles that those rules were based on vehicles from the 1980's?
2nd, he also stated that he has never passed a stock subaru wrx/sti as long as he has been there. And maybe people do pass there that look like they live there. It obvious they give preferance. My advice, get the stupid saftey inpsection on stock struts, then change it out after.
traffic is #4 in the US of most congested. Just sit it that **** from PH over to Ewa, you'll lose your mind and all the start stop traffic everyday.

here's some more proof that its almost impossible to have a modded vehichle especially a subaru on Oahu.

http://khon2.com/2014/02/24/modified...safety-checks/

http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/2...permit-backlog

and here's the biggest scam of all. A recon permit that is based on vehicles from the 1980's.

I saw lots of modded subies on Oahu last month when I was there... You can mod a lot w/o affecting anything that they'd have issue with.

I'm here in Honolulu and I gotta say, the Subie culture here is strong. Good mix of sedans and hatches, even saw a 2015 on Kamehameha HWY. Too bad I have a rental Altima, my instinct is to deuce but lol....

visiting and living there are two seperate things on Oahu. Like I said, if you don't have a shop that will bend the rules for you or you look like you belong on the island you won't pass inspection let alone trying to get a bogus recon permit. If not, just leave your subaru on the mainland.

i think shoots808 must have a real POS if he is having issues passing. They don't push on your fender they push on your front brace. You do need 1in of travel which isn't much at all. Im on air and passed as well as tons of other people I know. Exhaust is no longer part of recon so you don't have to worry about that. I wouldn't worry your self with these things. Have you seen all the modded and VIP cars here. not an issue.

my car was more safe than any other subaru that was there at the time and wasnt gay stanced, and yes the inspector made me push down on the front fender and no travel happened at all because im on coilovers. Exhuast was never an issue, they don't do emissions testing.

I 100% guarantee your car wasn't. The fact the inspector made YOU perform the test makes me think it was a little shady IDK.

there was another STI in front on me and he did the same test and the inspector laughed at him meanwhile the typical lifted toyota passed. And I've seen some of the subies on Oahu that never left the island. That's the typical response I would expect from a local.
