Ok, I have a potential donor engine...mine is shot with a knock at 180K. This N/A engine is in an 06 Impreza with 52k. The car was hit in the front enough to crack the timing cover, but otherwise the engine looks ok (battery leaked all over). But...
...its making a noise. Is this just piston slap magnified? The problem is that the salvage yard already cut off the catalytic converter under the car, so the exhaust is open there. The ones in front of the motor are still there. Sure sounds like its coming from the driver's side bank of cylinders, and I know thats often the first place problems develop, but the exhaust IS open. The yard owner said the engine sounded good with no noise when they first got the car, but THINKS it suddenly developed the noise while running at one point. He admits that the "no noise" running initially was before the cat was cut out. He isnt trying to make a sale...he thinks something went wrong with it and isnt sure its worth messing with. When I listen to it it sure sounds like an internal engine problem, but with my inexperience I dont want to assume. Maybe you guys cant help me with this, but it sure doesnt hurt to ask. I can get this engine complete for $250.

Sounds like rod knock. 250 is a low price but idk if it would be worth it for you to still buy it and get a new piston and cylinder put in. Id probably stay away, unless its worth fixing for the price. If you change one piston and cylinder you should do all four for sure and who knows what else they might find wrong inside.

Thanks guys. I had a feeling that was the answer, but with my inexperience I couldnt tell for sure. I remembered my father's 01 forester and the piston slap sound and kept asking myself if this was just magnified piston slap due to the open exhaust. My guess is it isnt worth it as you said.
