I've had my 2009 wrx for 3 months now. Just hit 8000 miles recently. I installed a defi racer boost gauge within the first week of owning the car. Ever since then, i've been very unsatisfied by the factory tune. It seemed that my boost was all over the place. I wasnt hitting target boost in the cold mornings, and then on the way in the afternoon back i was spiking dangerously high which looked like terrible boost creep on the gauge. I just wasn't happy with the stock tune
![]() So I decided to order a cobb AP from surgeline tuning. Sure enough they included their custom stage1 map which was modified to be used with a K&N drop in filter. Just received the AP today. Mating and reflash was absolutely a breeze and only took 5 minutes and viola. Completely different car ![]() Idles smoother, rpms dont hang between shifts and most importantly, my boost actually behaves consistently for once. Now, it always hits peak boost of 17psi and tapers beautifully to 14psi by 6250 rpm. No more creep either. Oh and yea, it feels a lot faster I honestly think that this was a good investment. I know there are gonna be people arguing about modding a completely brand new car. But, with the way it was running on the stock tune, it just didn't feel reliable enough. I always felt like i was jeopardizing engine longevity every time i saw the boost gauge behave inconsistent and wild. Please feel free to chime in. Especially if you own an 09 as well.

You may have saved your motor, assuming it's not already damaged. I'm of the opinion this is the best thing you can do to an 09 to make the engine live without damaging itself. Read the other threads about the blown up 08 STI's/09 WRX's

![]() I completely agree on having saved the motor. I listened my engine all over very carefully for almost an hour, just to make sure I haven't done any damage so far. My main concern has been how SOA has these 09's tuned to run so lean under full boost. Using my cobb as an AFR gauge now, with the stage1 reflash, it claims my AFR holds at 11.1 under boost then starts to raise as the boost tapers. Seeing that made me happy ![]() |

Subaru has no choice. If you want to blame someone, blame the EPA. The stock 02 sensor (assuming it's the same as the 02-07 which it might not be) only measures down to 11-11.3 so, you're probably alot richer than that. On my 03, the fuel map calls for 9-10ish under high load/high boost.
How many wires go into the primary 02 sensor? If it's more than 4 then it's probably a real wideband and not the faux wideband all the older suby's use. |

Well, the 02 sensor is better than a narrow band even on the older suby's. A real narrow band can't read AFR at all. It can tell you stoich (14.7) and richer or leaner than stoich but, that's it. So, you have something better than a narrow band. The question is whether you have a real wideband or the sort of wideband Subaru's been using for the past 6 yeas.

Understood. I'll observe the AP's data log tomorrow. So what you're saying is, during the whole time i datalog the lowest number the AFR hits is consistently 11.1, then i have the same o2 sensor setup as the previous years. I will be posting a video on youtube very soon. I'll make sure to post the link here. If you're interested, these are some videos I already have up. I know its an old post, but i have been doing some research. i just recently went to cobb stage 1 93 octane normal waste gate map on my 09 wrx. I am running a perrin drop in filter. How did you get your map modified for your k&N, did cobb make a custom one for that setup? I hit boost at 16.5, but would like to up that to what you were pulling. do you still have the map that you were using?
