Get a lower angle, use a lower aperture with a faster shutter, and I'd prefer using a manual focus to get a better depth of field.

Ok i know this is the picture thread but i figured id ask a quick question. im looking to get some lights to use for automotive night shots, portrait work, and product shots on a white backdrop. im really clueless on where to look and what to look at when it comes to lights and or flashes.

1. What is your budget?

Whatever light you think you might be interested in, do lots of research with side by side comparisons to other lights. If the reviewer posted photos for comparison, examine those closely. Find out what the reviewers didn't like about the lights as well as what they did like.

There are a lot of really cheap starter kits from places like Adorama (and I assume B&H and the like) that will get you going for a few hundred bucks. Or you can spend many thousands. Aside from the light itself, do not forget to add in the ancillary equipment such as modifiers, stands, portable power packs, transmitters/receivers, etc. It'll get expensive in a hurry.

The Alien Bee series is really popular. I went with a set of Einsteins. The Paul Buff products are really good value for money. When I was doing my research I watched a comparison video of the Einstein units vs a Profoto set-up. Were the Einsteins as good in the resulting photos? Not quite, but they were about 90-95% there, while costing thousands less. My budget also helped in that decision.

There really isn't a right answer to the question, just whatever you sort out in your budget that works for you and gets you the results you want. Some people do it with shop lights from Home Depot. Or there's the Joe McNally approach with varying set-ups of SB-800s (or whatever he's using these days).

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Nice website. Just picked up a Canon T3i myself for automotive films & some photography. I've been learning so much information in the last 2 days. Aperture, ISO, shutter speed, exposure, DOF, focal length, etc... There are so much to know in this hobby. I'm just starting to grasp a hold of all the jargon and what they are. Trying to find more videos about tips & tricks for filming & taking photo. This website will be great for downtime at work since I can't access youtube there.

Hey - thanks! I must admit, I love it too. I'm actually pleased with both model shoots - the one of the girl on the car/motorcycle and the one in the window. Got lots more from the second one that I haven't posted yet. The location from the second one is an old Civil War farm full of crumbling old buildings, open fields, and gorgeous evening light. It is such an awesome location - I go out there for both day and night work.

Guess I could put this up in here, since she's sitting on a motorcycle. Haven't been shooting too many cars lately.

I don't remember the settings off-hand - I think I was using my 50, 1.4, it was just before lunchtime on a cloudless day and there was scarcely a speck of dust on all that chrome - nor anywhere else on the bike for that matter.

And then this is the boat she sat on and in for most of the rest of the shoot:
