This snow tire talk reminds me I need wheels for my snow tires.

I'm finally going to be off the steelies this winter! I decided to pick up a set of stock wheels and put snow tires on those. If it's as mild as last year it will be kind of nice to look a little better than steelies.

It's not a car...but I wanted to test a couple of things last night with my Canon 5D Mark III.

Handheld...inside a dark atmosphere at f2.8 and ISO 5000 with no flash edited in Lightroom. The bokeh is grainy...but not nearly as bad as I was expecting when pushing the sensor that hard.

I love beer, therefor I love this picture. I think I'm going to have to expand this thread to all photography. I know we are obviously all car guys here but photography is more than just cars. Since we are OT I'll post two that I took this past weekend. I really love the look of. Edited all in Lightroom4

And this is one of my personal favorites from this weekend as well. If any of you have kids it's so amazing to capture little odd things they do.

I tend to go to this subdued/desaturated look a lot. Not sure how I really feel about it.

I'm actually a big fan of the de-sat look and feel. I need to re edit this one and darken some spots on the car but I turned down the saturation on this one.

instagram FTW! follow me @ JDSFOTOS hahahahaha...

but seriously, the de-sat look only looks good on the right photo at the right time...not on every photo everytime...just my .02 cents

Nothing looks good if its the same thing all the time. I try to edit photos differently and give them different looks so I don't get bored with them

I wouldn't call it night but it was getting dark fast and my ISO was going up. I don't have a tripod so I had to work fast. I'll post more up as I go through them. Here's another one.

Oh, and thanks!!

I think I'm gonna go back and darken this up a bit.

I really like the lighting on the car in the WRX shot. I'm not a fan of the dark background, but that may just be my preference.

Thanks! The background is actually an over hang so there is no light coming in from the top. I can try to lighten it up and see how it looks. I'm going to put a bunch more up later, so check back and let me know what you think.

That's what I figured. I don't think it's something you can fix in post. I usually prefer backgrounds that are lighter than the subject, but really that is all preference. IMO, a dark, almost black background like that is a bit boring.

I agree with you but I think it really makes the car stand out in that photo. I was wondering if you can give me some tips on car positioning. I took all front facing shots today but I would like some ideas on other suitable angles for automotive photography.

The forward 3/4 (like you're doing) is probably the most common. I usually like to to mine showing more of the side (but still basically a 3/4 shot). I usually make is so the rear most tire is between the front and rear tire on the front side of the car (yours is between the front two tires). But that is just preference.

Straight on front, straight on back, and profile are all going to be pretty common. Usually I do the low angle, but a much higher angle can also be interesting. It needs to be considerably higher than just a normal standing height to look good IMO. If you are shooting down at 45 degrees or more is looks pretty good to me.

Here's an example of the more side focused 3/4 shot I was talking about:
