I left work and proceeded on my way to the gym afterward. Worked out, and got into my car. Started up normal, reversed out of my parking spot, and starting driving away in first, after about 50ft my car turns off. I immediately tried turning the key but nothing. It will turn over but wont kick up. Tried push starting downhill, nothing.
Dropped it off at the shop and they said that the main relay was blown, they replaced it and it started fine, then shortly after it blew out again. They believe it is the fuel pump due to a dent in the tank from the previous owner and think the fuel pump is damaged.. they want me to replace the fuel pump and the fuel tank.. Any help on what the problem could be guys? I dont have the 1300 extra dollars for this fix. Thanks for any info! Car is a 2003 2.5 rs impreza

I not sure about the 12 but I think it would be the same, there is a plate you remove in the trunk to pull the fuel pump. With the pump out you could push the tank out if it was a problem.

I dont think its a pump or tank issue though because they got the car to start up once they changed the relay, I called them back and he said he thinks it may be grounded somewhere or not getting enough resistance.. And I have noo clue on the electrical. I have a family friend who is a mech. helping me out, just looking for somewhere to start.

its more common for relays like that to fail because of high current loads like when cranking to start with an old worn out starter. Or they can be defective but that wouldn't explain why the original and replacement relay failed unless you are the unluckiest person ever.

I've never had any problems with the car before up until now, so I'd like to think my luck isn't too bad, (knock on wood).. getting the car back from the shop tonight and I'll start tearing into it tomorrow after work. I am hoping its something simple, I need to get it up and running by the end of the weekend.

I had a short in my front O2 sensor harness that could stop the car from starting, or blow the relay and kill it while running depending on which wires shorted at what time. |

Come to find out, it wasnt the main relay that blew it was the fuel pumps fuse.. He gave me a new one, and told me to check out the fuel pump, replace it if needed then replace the fuse, and try to start the car.. If it blows again, there must be a ground or short in the wiring
