Default Import Image Racing (FMS) Powdercoating Review

UPDATE 01/14/13: Josh from Import Image Racing has confirmed that they have stopped using this powdercoating shop and are now doing the work in house. He offered to replace my core, but was unable to obtain a replacement. He also offered to strip and recoat my core if I sent it in. I am unable to do this because I daily drive the car and couldn't have it down for that long. Instead he refunded me the money I paid for the powdercoating. Great response and accountability! I am very happy with the resolution and plan to have the core stripped and recoated locally.

**********************************************

I bought the Fast Motorsports (Import Image Racing house brand) Front Mount Intercooler about 1 year ago. I got it with a black core and red pipes. Here is a link for the FMIC kit I bought:

http://www.importimageracing.com/fas...u-wrx-sti.html

Here is the link for the powdercoating service:

http://www.importimageracing.com/imp...g-service.html

When it arrived, the coating on the pipes looked great. There was one flaw where it looked like the pipe was bumped while the paint was still wet, but it ended up in a location you would never see, so it didn't bother me.

The black coating on the core looked pretty good. If you looked closely you could see that it wasn't perfectly even, but it looked decent overall. The finish was more smooth than the pipes (not wrinkle) and it looked good on the car.

But within a month the black coating on the core started to chip off. Even after a few hundred miles it was already noticeably chipped up. I didn't really take detailed pictures of it, but over time it's just gotten worse and worse.

20 days:

3 months:

15 months (current):

After just over a year it is bad enough that it's very obvious that it's not completely black, even from a distance. All in all, it's not terrible, but I don't think I'd recommend IIR's powder coating. I would probably just get it bare and then have it coated somewhere else.

At this point I doubt there's anything IIR will do for me. I'd love a new core, but I think it's far too late for that. I might have it stripped and recoated by someone else eventually, but I know the cost will be pretty significant compared to the cost of the entire kit when I bought it.

Maybe my experience is just a fluke. I'd be curious to see if other IIR powdercoating is holding up...

Here is a further away shot of how it currently stands. It's not horrible, but you can definitely tell it's not how it should be...

Flat black spray paint as a quick / temp fix?

I too have heard FMS's coatings aren't that great. Granted a FMIC is gonna get beat up because of it's location though. I had an e-hardon for the FMS FMIC, but I think I'm going to change my route and just get a TMIC, un-coated, and maybe not even FMS's version

I really like the stealth black look, but uncoated aluminum is going to be the best option for heat transfer. If I could do it all over again, I would probably go with an uncoated core.

I do wish the IIR coating had lasted longer though. It looked really good with the black core and black car (when I first got it and it wasn't chipped up).

I spray painted mine with high temp grill paint and its holding up better than your after a month. Somebody didn't prep the metal. I imagine that they don't blast new intercoolers before they coat them which is the wrong way to go about powder coating.

I'm to the point where I feel like any coating isn't worth the trade off in heat transfer, since I'm sure they'll all end up looking like crap eventually. Anyone want to trade me for an uncoated core? Or have any ideas on how to strip the powdercoating?

Give Grimmspeed a call and ask about ceramic coating. I had them coat my (your) downpipe and it turned out awesome. Price was very reasonable.

Yeah, I've considered that. The only issue is that a thermal coating (or any coating, really) is going to stop/reduce heat transfer. Good for exhaust parts, bad for an intercooler. Once it looks crappy enough and I get bored enough I think I'll strip it. If I hate the look of a silver core I'll have it coated somewhere.

Ummm, Ben, hate to be a Debbie Downer on your OCDness, but you aren't running a prostock dragster where every hundredth of a second counts. I highly highly highly doubt a light coat of flat black is gonna kill things. It would definitely look better than whatcha got now.

How are the engine bay pipes holding up?

It may not be a big difference, but it is certainly making performance worse and the only gain is better looks.

The piping is doing pretty well. There are a couple chips near the BPV from getting bumped, but not too bad.

hi guys. i think we need to be really really clear about 1 thing.

IIR has only started IN HOUSE powder coating for just a few weeks.

We used to outsource to a local company, but since they did not meet our standards we had to purchase all of our own equipment and do it ourselves.

You will find that any product since we have announced our in house coating works flawlessly.

No need to give my in house guys a bad wrap because of another companies lack their of. They work VERY hard. do all the prep work. we use the highest quality materials and equipment. I've poured a small fortune into making sure out newest powder coating is the best and we invite you to try it out for yourself.

best regards

Josh

here are a few examples of what we have done in house-

see how you can beat it up with a hammer? yeah i do not think rocks would do that to your intercooler if it was coated here

real prep work!

we are now coating for local motorcyle companies, wheel shops and many other companies because of our attention to detail and dedication to customer satisfaction.

also i sent you a note to cover you on the costs of the coating, even a year later. I want to make sure you are a happy IIR customer, even though we did not coat it, i will cover the costs of the coating out of my own pocket.

i wish so too! thank you again! I look forward to many reviews of customers that have sent us their items for coating. we've been doing a ton of headers, exhausts and intercoolers now. I'm very confident in our abilities, we've been testing them on diesel trucks, turbo subies, drift cars, you name it. we do bake most items for 2 hours at 700 degrees. That means if you have your catback coated there is no way its going to chip off
the coated downpipes and up pipes to me as well as turbo housings and turbo manifolds are the real test to see if a coating will withstand the temps. and they do! we've even got some contracts with local shops to cerakote guns...between the coating, porting, and machine shop, our 2nd location will really help control the quality of our services. No longer will we be at the mercy of the lazy! (you can tell im pretty excited right?)

Update: I have been working with Josh on this issue, and we've come to an agreement, but parts have been unavailable for the last 2+ months. I have been told "a couple weeks" multiple times now. I hope the parts actually come in soon so I can update this review. At this point I'd be fine with an uncoated core. I'm just getting sick of looking at this chipped up one.

thats correct. As stated, As soon as FMS sends us replacement cores we'll be happy to ship you one. Until they arrive from the manufacturer, nothing i can do. there is no date of arrival. Everytime i talk with the supplier he says he is sending me some replacement cores. Still not here. I guess when people send you free parts you are at their mercy, as I am my supplier. I hope they come in soon! have a great weekend.

Josh

As an update: Josh has graciously agreed to swap my core, but that is pending that he has a spare core lying around. Due to a poor supplier of the FMS intercooler components, he does not ever have a core available, so this will probably never happen. So far it's been 3 months with no change in sight. Until then I will keep waiting and I'm sure the coating will just keep getting worse and worse.
