I'm just happy that it finally has a 6 speed manual transmission.

Your memory is a little foggy. This was caught months after a concept was shown and a week before Subaru showed a full side profile of the production car, and less than two weeks before the whole thing debuted at the New York Auto Show.

I can only hope it's mule.

While development and production are two separate entities, I would figure that they would need additional time to get things rolling with the production of the new cars due to the fact that they were behind on the other ones. They might have it down on paper since they were directly affected by the quake, but they need to do more than just that to get a new car out there which may or may not have been pushed back in schedule due to the unforeseen forces of nature.
I didn't say it couldn't have caused a delay. I just doubt it did. It is still far enough away from them ordering the components needed for production.

The hood scoop alone is an EXTREMELY strong marker for my conclusion - y'all know the importance of the hood (shape) and scoop design on intercooler efficiency, right?
You are just "seeing" a 2012 Impreza. As for your hood scoop theory, look at the XV diesel in Europe. No hood scoop for it's top mount intercooler.

Key word there. The Legacy GT WAS a non-turbo. Then they gave it one. They can certainly give the current Impreza a more powerful engine(be it a turbo or just a 2.5NA) and decide to call it a GT. Nothing wrong with that.

Assuming there will not be a turbocharged *Impreza* (a safe assumption at this point), then this mule provides decent evidence that the STI and WRX will not only share the basic platform with the Impreza, but also share the same basic wheelbase and track width. (like they always have).

The chances of the hoped for (by some) smaller "sportier" cars are looking pretty slim at this point

I hope they are lighter and more powerful. Keep the luxury, fuel economy, price as it is and make it higher performance. That's my word dawg.

Waiting for all the bitching about needing 3 shifts to get to 60 resulting in slower 0-60 times.

I would honestly NOT be surprised if this is truly the 2014. All the hype and buzz surrounding this was kind of silly considering Subaru already said it would be loosely based on the 2013 Impreza anyway.

I will say this though, if this really is it (or similar) it looks 100 times better than the 2008 remake. The 2008-2010 series was extremely boring and blah-worthy.

Ha. Yeah. That's why I love my 2011 WRX.

Still would rather have the STI though...

There was a rumor that the next WRX will be based on the advanced tourer concept that was shown at Tokyo last year, so it may have already been shown in concept form. This would count as the spy shot of the testing mule, so the next logical step is some kind of production photos leaked ahead of it's debut at some car show (my guess is this year's Tokyo or next year's NY show), and then it will go on sale late next year as a 2014. The BRZ followed basically the same timeline, concept in April 2011, spied testing at the Ring in June, unveiled at Tokyo in November, finally on sale in May 2012.

http://www.motortrend.com/future/fut...led_last_year/

Based on this, and how undisguised this thing is, I think it's just a powertrain mule. The WRX will be impreza based but will probably not share much sheet metal with the base impreza. Now what I would really like to see is what's under the hood. 2.0DIT with a 6 speed manual would be awesome.

car and driver has some pictures with the hood open, unfortunately everything is covered, but the oil filter means it is definitely an FB or FA engine. It also looks like the hood design is not just a one off thing.

That is what I think it is. Forget looking at brakes. Forget looking at wheels. Well, forget looking at anything on the surface. Even wheelbase.

So they cut a square out of a Impreza hood and then put a square cutout of a hood from a current WRX in it's place. Look very closely at that other pic of the hood again. Sure. It fits. That's why engineers get paid well.

EXACTLY. No way, the 2014 WRX would be all of the sudden driving around with no camo. 1 year before release.

Subaru is just using the impreza as a test platform for the new WRX/STI drivetrain. The engine is based on the same block as the 2012 impreza so it bolts in nicely, there may be a some modifications to the frame for fitting the 6 speed and additional AWD hardware but it's Subaru for god's sake, they have the means to do it. And the hubs/brakes/wheels, not the first time I see a brake swap on a subaru ;-).

The 2L turbo FA is in North America for testing, that's all... It's definitely a good thing and I hope the new WRX/STI will be a step up.

I wouldn't mind a six speed with the WRX 5 speed gearing and a 6 gear for highway mileage. 5 speeds have served me well so far.

The new WRX WILL be a smaller capacity engine and smaller car so it can re-enter the WRC ....enough said.

almost certainly the 6spd from the Legacy (5 speed modified with an additional gear) - you can tell by the molded plastic reverse ring, rather than the one the STi has

I hope that is really just a test mule. Its body is definately a Honda Civic.
When you start to take the styling cue from Honda, its really a bad news.
