Default Winter rallycross at Steamboat

There will be 2 rallyxs, one in the 1st week in January, the 2nd in the 1st week in February.

I'm in the process of putting on an all day snow rallycross at Steamboat this winter at the Winter Driving School facilities. This event is not related in anyway, shape or form to the current Colorado SCCA Rallyx series. This is a feeler event. Depending on its success, it may become a more frequent occurrence. The event will be limited to 40 cars (using a lottery to select the entrants). This will be a faster event than you're probably used to. Speeds will be in the 50-60 mph range with the faster cars (it was 3rd gear in my Subaru RS). The approximately one mile long course will consist of rolling terrain, sweepers, decreasing radii turns, off camber turns, decent straight-aways leading into hairpins and smooth. Definitely not a boring course. The course is surrounded by snow banks and chances are the snow banks will be quite hard. Any substantial offs will be rewarded with bent sheet metal. But it'll take a complete knucklehead maneuver to go in that hard and that deep. Chances are you will go off at least once, and if you need to be pulled out the 1st tug will be free, the subsequent ones will be $5 per. I've yet to decide what scoring system we'll use, as in autox scoring (best single) or rallyx (your total times). Whacking a cone will have the same detrimental effect on your times regardless of the system used. Weather permitting, we'll be using electronic timing and scoring, barring that, stopwatches. Ideally, we'll have a couple of cars out on the course at one time. The format might be after morning practice, two laps at speed for qualifying with an in and out lap. Then you'll go out for 5 consecutive timed laps (with one in and one out). The reason for qualifying is to have you go out for the competition part with other cars that run the approximate same times. If you run up on a slower car, and get in what I consider the safety cushion (15+ seconds between cars) you'll get a flag to slow down and get a rerun for that lap, or you'll stay out another lap. Like I said, all of this is still in the works.

Rules are in the development stage. Only dedicated snow tires will be permitted, no all seasons. My guess is that we'll use the current SCCA classifications for the cars. As I mentioned earlier, the course will be smooth and any car on regular ride height will be able to participate. You can also ride with anyone during the event.

A couple of things to consider. Due to the speeds, this is not an event for novices or near novices. I understand mistakes are going to happen, but if after being warned by the powers that be you're deemed to be a hazard, you will be asked to leave with no refund. Speaking of which, the price per driver will be $120 which will be sent in when the registration is opened and then the 40 will be selected. Obviously, if you don't make the cut, your check will be returned to you with my regrets.

If this event interests you or you have any questions, please email me back off list at mdgerrard@msn.com

Thanks, Mark

I think you may want to do what AutoX does for their school. Give a date, people can send in their money. The first 40 checks that get there, those people get to go. If it's postmarked before the date, you are automatically disqualified.

Also please don't make that date between the 1st of October and 15 of October, since I'll be on my honeymoon and unable to check my email.

You've got plenty of time. This won't happen until December at the earliest.

Yes, you'll need helmets, especially if you have a cage. No pace notes as you can ride as often as you wish as a passenger.

I have already taken the 1day class at Bridgestone driving school. Will this meet still cost me this much money. I believe I can buy track time for alot less.

The WDS school cost you around $285, this is a lot less. The price for the rallycross is dictated by the cost of the course for the day. Cheaper prices will mean more cars (more cars going off and getting stuck) and less runs for you.

Default Steamboat Rally

Hey, me and my pal BSMotorsports rally on dirt roads around colorado springs, but don't have much experience in this timed rally at all. I was wondering if you would allow spectators at this rally? E-Mail me at polo_black@yahoo.com with the date of the rally and the exact location.

are you confident that everyone will go off course, and what kind of chances are there for bending sheetmetal compared to a regular rallyX.

When I say everyone will go off, maybe thats too broad of a statement. Everyone will have a few "moments". If you go off hard, thats where you might and I say might bent some sheetmetal. And depending on the temperature of the day, the snow banks may be hard. Remember, you are surrounded by snowbanks, this track is cut out of the snow (the sides are angled away from the track, its not like the boards on a hockey rink). The times I was there, I really saw no permanent damage. Most offs will be quite minor and you can just back up and be on your way.

The date is up in the air at the moment. Rest assured I will not have it the same weekend as any Pro Rally events. Spectators will be allowed after signing the usual waivers.

Default Tentative dates for Steamboat rallyx(s) are...

Yes, rallyxs, as in more than one. If the 1st is a success, there will be a 2nd one a month later. Dates are 1st weeks in Jan and Feb.

As I'm no longer a Suby owner, I don't lurk here anymore. So, email me at mdgerrard@msn.com
