Too late for the group buy probably (I already have 3 on the wait list).

LIDAR unit operators aim at the license plate on the front of your vehicle.

The Lidatek Laser Echo detects the laser signal and begins sending infrared pulses back to the police gun to jam its distance (and hence speed) calculations. (The unit has a ~14mW laser diode in it and very sophisticated optics!!!)

This takes place for 5 seconds, after which the jammer must cool down for a minute. Luckily, 5 seconds is plenty of time for you to slow down, and then the police officer can try again and get another reading of your (hopefully) now legal speed.

Most police LIDAR units show an error code which is easily attributable to operator error or interference from ambient light.

There is always the possiblity of "obstruction of justice" though no one (yet) has been hit with that. You could argue that a radar detector does the same thing.

However, Canada is not a place where you would want to use it.

Obviously if you're doing 130 they're still going to pull you over.

I've also had tickets where they just "made up" the speed without a real reading, so it only works on "relatively honest" police.

One time I was clocked going 78 in a 55. (Back then that was our state speed limit even on the freeways). I told the cop that I didn't believe I was going that fast so he showed me the readout. I was suprised that he did that, but my teacher said they have to show you the readout if you ask.

I dunno if that is just in CT or total BS, but if you are going to get a ticket anyways I'm sure it can't hurt to ask.

In WA they don't - I asked to see it and he showed it to me (blank) and said "I must have accidentally cleared it".

Yeah, right.

In Finland cops can't either give you a speed ticket if you asked to show the reading and the police hasn't got readings to show. I think it's fair. Dunno if it's same there, but sounds reasonable if they are giving you a ticket for specified speed, they should have something to proof it. By the way we have here in finland many world records of speed tickets. I think the last record was 45000 USD (300000 marks). I'd be interested of the technology of jammer too. Obviously not the same as in the Stealth fighters

don't they give ticket fines based on your income in Finland or the netherlands? I remember a millionaire got a $90000 USD ticket for speeding, cuz he made so much......

Yeah, I heard that about Norway too. BUT, the bright side is if your a poor college student, the ticket should be really cheap!!!

Anyways, as far as laser jammers go, they are perfectly legal. All the device does is emit electromagnetic radiator in the near visible wavelength (using light emitting diodes), which is regulated by the FDA, not FCC. And, as far as I know, the FDA has not banned such use. Hopefully, as long as they are not widely used, states may not catch on to this.

BTW, this is a VERY ingenious setup. When I was looking at such jammers a year ago, my grip was that they didn't shut off. In fact, one member got a whole bunch of crud from a small town cop about using one - since the cop couldn't lock after 3-4 tries. At the time, I couldn't find any with a automatic shut off - except one had an integrated switch that you could just turn off.

HEY, I know it's a long shot, but put me down on the wait list!!!

I didn't know that they had to show it to you. I just got a ticket about two weeks ago, 62 in a 40....AROUND A CORNER!!! I was a bit iffy, but I was trying out my new intake set up...but still, this was through a three turn S curve....wait..would that be a M curve or somethng?...well any way i didn't really believe him, but...

Problem with mounting the detector there is that Police are trained to aim the laser at the license plate, a nice flat reflective surface. The laser beam is relatively small, so the farther away from the license plate, the less likely the jammer can detect the beam and go to work. But I will admit that install is rather inconspicuous.

Actually it isn't a problem. Where it is mounted is < 6 inches from the license plate and the beam is about 2 foot dia at x00 ft.

Yes, the police are trained to aim at the license plate, but also their hands move, so the beam does wobble about a little too (imagine aiming a camera with a zoom lens).

The guy at Lidatek actually recommended where I installed it. I will go test it out with one of his laser guns too.

Yes, the fines are mostly (there are some basic sums for smaller over speeds) based on the income. The sum of 90000$ I think you're referring was canceled in the higher court. The millionare at the speeding time was taking out the firms stock options. When the penalty was reformed at the court his current incomes was near zero (due to the weak IT sector market position) so the fine was reduced to 400 marks (60 USD) In Finland even radar detectors are forbidden.
