Default 2006 9-2x 2.5i starting issues.

I've been having problems with the Saabaru the last few days. Here's what's going on:

Tues.

7:45am = Starts up fine, go to work.
5:15pm = Go to leave work, just clicks when I try to start it, get jumped.
6:00pm = Battery tests bad (13.14V - 34CCA), was original from 2006, replaced.
6:30pm = Get gas, starts up fine.

Wed.

7:45am = Ready to go to work, crank crank crank, barely starts. Trip meter and radio are reset, but clock is still correct.
8:40am = Get to work, start is a few times just fine, disconnect battery.
5:40pm = Go to leave work, reconnect battery and it just cranks and cranks. After about three attempts, it starts.
6:00pm = Battery tests at 12.73V and 591CCA (640CCA rated).
6:10pm = Battery tests at 12.66V and 573CCA. Starter reads 10.73V while cranking (which it says is normal). Test found no problem with the starting system.
6:40pm = After talking for a while, put gas dry in and leave store and car starts just fine.
7:15pm = Get home. Car starts fine a couple times.
8:45pm = Go test start the car and starts just fine. Leave battery connected.

Thurs.

7:40am = Go to start car to go to work. Crank crank crank and then clicks. Trip meter and radio are reset, but clock is still correct. Try again and starts after cranking a few times.
8:30am = Get to work and shut it off. Try to start it and starts right up. Left battery connected.

Oh great NASIOC, please guide me with your wisdom.

After I changed my brakes and recharged my K&N air filter, here's where I am so far today...

I did a battery drain test first. As soon as I made contact the initial draw was 320mA. After two seconds of so, it dropped to 10-30mA. Subsequent tests yielded similar results with only the initial reading coming up 260-300mA. Every time, it would settle around 10-30mA and sometimes pulsate between 10-20-30mA every now and then.

Next I read the battery voltage at 12.x V. Cleaned the terminals real good, and tightened them down. Tried to start, cranked slow two times and battery started clicking. Jumped it, and the reading while charging was 14.x V. Shut it off, and battery tested 12.x V while off again. Tried to start it again, but no dice. Jumped it again, and have it running at the moment since it seems to start after you had it running a while.

I'll check the connection at the starter and see if that is good and tight. I read that a bad alternator diode can let the alt charge, but also drain with the key off. But a alt diode drawing the batt should show on my draw test, correct?

The draw looks good. Test the voltage right at the starter terminal when cranking. If it's low there but still 12+ at the battery, there is a voltage drop due to a bad connection between the battery and starter.

Thanks! I'll give that a look.

A little additional info... I charged it for an hour and then disconnected the alt after I shut it off. Let it sit for a while, reconnected... crank crank click click click. So the alt isn't draining anything. Battery voltage still reading 12.4V. Had my wife try to start it and it went down to 3V and wouldn't start. I had her crank it longer and it went down to 3, then 6, then 8 and almost started. Maybe they sold my a bad batt to replace my bad batt... Come to think of it, it didn't have a cap on the positive terminal, and I think the others did. Maybe I'll have to see about getting a warranty replacement tomorrow if swapping in the battery from my wife's car (Impreza) starts it right up. If it that doesn't work, something related to the starter is what I'm thinking.

Swapped in the wife's batt. Read 12.5V. Dropped to 10.5V when starting. Started fine. Tested pos to starter and had 12.5V off, 10.3V when starting. Neg to starter read 12.5V off and 10.2V when starting. I'm thinking they sold me a bum battery... Noticed a date code when I traded it in, and they sold me an 11 month old battery at first...

It does sound like the battery is bad. Exchange it.

Already did just that and haven't had a problem since. Thanks for your help.

Cheers!
