Yeah, unlike the past iPhones the i5 is no slouch, and base on benchmark tests, one of the fastest phones available right now.

Apple explains purple flare issue affecting camera on iPhone 5 (and other smartphones)

Quote:
The purple flare phenomenon you're seeing in certain photos taken with the iPhone 5 is perfectly normal, according to Apple, and it's an issue that affects the cameras found in nearly all smartphones. The company today posted a support article seeking to eliminate concerns that the problem is inherent to its latest handset, explaining that the purplish light can in fact be replicated with every prior iPhone model.

Apple says the issue arises when users take pictures with a light source that's just outside the frame. This light "causes a reflection off the surfaces inside the camera module and onto the camera sensor" that results in an unwelcome flare or haze. Apple's suggestion is to simply recompose your shot slightly until the issue disappears or shield the camera with your hand to minimize any flaring.

Immediately after the iPhone 5 launched, users were quick to voice concerns over the device's susceptibility to scratches, scuffs, and other hardware blemishes some even arrived with physical flaws out of the box. Apple's response to the purple haze "controversy" is likely an attempt to head off further doubts about its new flagship hardware. In this case, though, the company's explanation checks out with photo experts. For example, in their quick review of the iPhone 5's camera, the folks at Digital Photography Review told buyers "not to worry" about the issue and to merely avoid composing shots with bright lights at the edge of your frame.

So my iPhone 4 mic is still wonky. It'll work for extended periods then work intermittently for a while. I've done the hearing aid mode and it didn't change anything. I know it's the noise canceling mic up top since it works fine with any other app other than the phone.I've cleaned it, etc. I feel bad selling it knowing it'll stop working. Any suggestions? I'll be getting the 5 here soon

Does it malfunction in all of the modes like speakerphone and facetime? Does it work with the inline mic on the earbuds? Does it record voice memos? Since you are selling it, I would try a full wipe and set it up as a new phone and see if that solves it (eliminate possibility of software issue). Older software solution. If it is a hardware issue, I would disclose that in the sale of the item. It will still sell pretty well as I am assuming the rest of it works fine.

Support thread.

edit: reading comprehension fail. You said it affects only the phone app. I would definitely do a fresh install.

I don't know why there's not really a clear answer on why the mic will stop working during calls (and still work in any other app but the phone app) other than it's the noise canceling mic. I got one of the first iphone 4s (you're holding it wrong!) so I'll attribute it to a manufacture issue and multiple droppings.

That being said I saw this a while ago and finally stopped being lazy and went to Home Depot for the screwdriver.

So far the janky fix works

How to fix the iPhone 4 (4s) Mic problem - YouTube

I thought it was due to something when service provider towers are experiencing high usage volume it'll receive but not send info and is specific to the antenna in the iphone. Otherwise it doesn't make sense. When I was travelling and this occurred maybe 1 in 6 calls in areas of high population, a second call would not have the issue.

If you google there's a very common issue with the 4 of what I've mentioned in the above. Not just every couple calls. It's consistent.

Microphone issue? I had a 4 for 2+ years and the closest I came to a mic issue was the proximity sensor sucked and sometimes I would mute the phone with my face.

Well, looks like I will be keeping the iPhone 5. Found a hairline crack on the back bottom glass. No pictures because it's too small to photograph well. I haven't broken glass on any iPhone yet, so it figures this would happen so fast.

Any decent slim cases out there? Too many to choose from without a suggestion. I liked the magpul case a lot for the 4/4s. I prefer slim because I prefer no case.

Thinking maybe I should get that AppleCare after all. It protect against user error?

Double post.

I don't know how it broke. It slipped off my lap once and fell about 10" to padded rubber (work truck) but showed no damage at the time. Only time anything sketchy has happened with it.

Yeah, but when you have the top guy get hired by apple, most jailbreak openings get closed. Will there be a jailbreak? Yes, but it won't be anytime soon like the iP4/4s

Verizon customers: Did you know that they are collecting your personal info (on by default)? They can sell your web history and location data to marketers unless you tell them not to. Check the Verizon iphone app and manage your privacy settings or go to http://www.vzw.com/myprivacy.

I was all like "back glass?" then realized its 90% aluminum, and a little bit of glass.

The word from Magpul (my friend is a dealer) is the 5 case is in development. I am waiting impatiently.

In the mean time, I acquired a silicone case from GameStop for the low low price of free. They had them on the shelf for $10, and it looked decent enough because it was slim and would prevent it from sliding around in my dash pocket. I went to pay for it and it rang up as $0.00, the guy looked at it sideways, then printed a receipt and said, "Have a nice day."

AppleCare+ is $99 then there is a $50 deductible for accidental damage. I think you get 2 instances...
