Default Engine is possibly dead, what are my options?

As I was coming back from the grocery store, I made a right turn and heard a loud clunk followed by a horrible rattling noise (like stirring a mixture of nuts and bolts inside a coffee can with a wooden spoon). The car started losing power and I pulled into a parking lot to get out of traffic (I had a hunch it was gonna be bad). The car died in the parking lot, and started up one additional time before dying completely. Two days later...

The shop says that it looks like one of the pulleys failed (as the timing belt was very loose) and there's more likely than not, engine damage, i.e. bent valves and so on. They have not pulled the heads yet, but say that I should expect about $2500 in repairs as it sits right now. The repair bill might go up depending on if there's additional engine damage. They are waiting for me to tell them whether to pull the heads and do an inspection or not.

The timing is horrible as I owe less than $1000 on my car loan, and was planning to pay it off by December, and then trade in the car towards a Forester.

My question is: what are my options, considering that I had planned to get rid of the car in a few months anyways? Obviously, I doubt any dealer will want a non-working car, so I would like to fix the damage. At the same time, I obviously don't want to spend huge amounts of money to fix a car that I will not be keeping. If the repairs start edging towards $3500-4000 (approximately half the value of my car) I don't see the feasibility in even getting it repaired.

Feel free to throw any suggestions my way. Also, I would appreciate the name/location/info on any resources (i.e. where to buy a shortblock) that I should consider as I have been in Massachusetts less than a year and still haven't had a chance to visit many of the local shops/garages/etc.

Don't bother rebuilding it. Just get a replacement EJ205 longblock from here. 02-05 is all the same. They can be had in good working condition for $1500-2500 easy.

Hybrid is also an option but more expensive.
Figure $1500 for a ej255 shortblock and then the additional expense getting your heads rebuilt and machined for a hybrid build.
