Bought mine at 36 yrs old, now 44. It was hit and totaled so I got another one and have had it 6yrs. Until this I'd never paid over $5k for a car. I don't like car payments.

OP, unless you can pay cash for a car, don't get in to a car loan while you're in college. Plus, your car insurance will be steep too. Enjoy college, if all you're doing is going to class and working (so you can afford your car), you aren't going to be having much fun. College is about getting some life experiences, partying and all the young girls....take advantage of it!!

18 years old when I bought my first 02 wrx. Worked two jobs my senior of high school to afford it. Then 3 1/2 years later sold it with a bad piston at 145k miles and bought another 02 wrx a few months ago this time a wagon with only 64k miles and it's a lot easier to afford this time around

I agree its not a good idea to have car payments especially in college. Plus you probably would rather spend the money on mods anyway

I did my STi swap this year.

I can't afford an actual STi.

I figure, enjoy my hobbies and don't be afraid to spend now (within reason by being fiscally responsible) because it won't be easier when I'm older.

I bought my 07 WRX when I was 22, paid cash for it.

After that was totaled, the insurance ended up giving me a lot mroe than I paid for the car. I sold a few firearms to come up with a bit more cash and bought my new ('08) STI, which is totally paid for as well.

I won't lie to you, I got some help from my family when I initially bought my WRX (about 5000 worth), but I will never consider financing a car, and if the additional help hadn't been there I would have simply paid cash for something cheaper.

Unless you are making a very very large down payment, financing a depreciating asset such as a car is a bad move.

FWIW, I drove a toyota rav4 with 200,000+ miles on it before the WRX, and I just saved saved saved instead of financing a car back then.

I bought my STi right before I turned 48. Definitely would not have been able to buy one in college. Bought my first "new" vehicle (truck) when I was 37.

21 and I have an 09 WRX 5 Door. If you have to think about whether or not you can afford it, you should probably look for something else. Maybe start with a 2.5i?

When I had my STi, I had bought it when I was 20. I made the payments and paid the insurance myself. But I had a full time job and wasn't going to school.

But, I agree with Lindyn11(1st response).

That's not so bad then. I'd say if it doesn't take more than 30% of your income in total and you live at home, do it.

First wrx at 19.
still paying on a 10k loan.
Car with 135k fresh paperwork on a newly built stock motor. Would of been 7k except well being 19 credit was a no go so had to go for **** faces inhouse financing.
Currently 20 my bugeye is still going.
My income was ok last year made average 36k.
Now 56k within a year and a couple more months to pay on my car off.

edit: i was fresh out of high school having only been a graduate for 5 days before i got it. then i worked my ass off to get a good job. no hard labor for me i work in a bank :')

also main thing to consider is low mpg. high insurance cost, and if financed a heafty down payment but best to save buy it cash. (wish i wasnt a stubborn kid when i financed mine on my own)
