Default '01 RS w/Spun Rod Bearing, Shortblock Options?

I have an '01 RS w/85k on it that spun a rod bearing. I need to get the car up and running ASAP and am having some trouble finding a used '00-'04 2.5L shortblock to drop in there.

I know that some of the older EJ25 blocks had piston/valve clearance issues, but I'm finding a bunch of '98-'99 foresters for cheap at the moment... Would I have any problems using an older Phase 1 DOHC shortblock with my newer Phase 2 SOHC heads and intake manifold?

Another possible option is that I have a good running Phase 1 EJ22 motor from a '93 Legacy available to me. However, I'm not sure how much work it would be to swap it in since it's originally from an OBD1 car... Was thinking of just using my RS intake manifold to simplify the wiring and sensors, but then I think I would need to use the 2.5L heads right? I'm guessing this would provide unsatifactory results due to the lower displacement and compression, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also note that this just needs to be a good runner for now, not really worried about performance on this one. :-)

Note: I do know how to use the search function and have done so already. Also, I'm not willing to try and rebuild the shortblock that I have at this point.

ha iv got the same year and engine issue, i ended up swaping my shortblock with an ej25d, all you have to do is use the 25d headgaskets and you should be all good to go

I'd be leary of using a 25d shortblock. There's a reason they changed the whole of that engine design; they eat rod bearings. I have one in my OBS, but I replaced the bearings and rings and put a WRX oil pump in. Not to say it's a bad engine, but if you're just block swapping, it's a bit risky for my tastes.

At what mileage did yours go at? I'm only at 85k :-( I'm sure it was used and abused in it's previous life though.

I realize that they aren't the greatest motors, but my EJ251 ate a rod bearing too...

Right, but being that the 25Ds fail fairly commonly on that, is it worth going through the trouble of installing a used one only to find out that it was a couple hundred miles from spinning one? Just hate to see someone go to the trouble and get bit.

You might have better results looking on RS25. If you are interested I have a friend in Portland that can probably come up with the correct sb for you and ship it to you for a decent price. If you want his info just pm me.

I do understand where you're coming from, if I could get a hold of a low mileage '00-'04 EJ251 that would be ideal... It's just finding one for less than $500 is kinda tough at the moment. I used to be able to find them with around 100k on them for $250 all day long. :-(

I will try posting on there as well, thanks. PM sent, however I can't imagine that shipping a shortblock would be all the economical... :-)
