Default Thinking about moving to WA

Hey everyone.

I currently live in Colorado Springs, CO. I was considering buying a house here, but it's going to be too expensive to get anything good. So I started thinking about other places where I thought I might like to live. So, I thought, I love the rain, and the ocean, and the mountains. Why not WA? Took a look at house prices in the Tacoma area and they seem within line with my budget. My question for you guys is basically "How do you like it?" also, how is the job market especially for tech-helpdesk style work. I know it sucks everywhere right now, but how bad does it suck there right now? Should I be looking anywhere around the area besides Tacoma? Any recommendatons? I might take a trip out there and bring the RS-T around the beginning of the year. Oh, and how about emmissions? Is my car gunna pass emmissions there with the turbo?

Emissions test aren't that tough as of yet. The job market however is. As you travel North from Tacoma housing prices increase considerably.

I'd say this... Stay in Colorado.

The job market for IT workers here is crap. I've been in IT for 10 years, and haven't had steady work since June. There aren't a lot of jobs out there. For every 100 resumes I send out, I might get 1 or 2 calls. - and 2 years ago, people were practically pounding my door down. There just isn't a lot of jobs to go around... something like 30,000 IT people got laid off here in the last year.

Also... Tacoma is really cheap, but there's also a lot of areas in Tacoma you wouldn't wanna live in. Gang activity, high crime, drugs.. Not to mention the infamous "Tacoma Aroma" (paper mills... aaaaaaaaaaaaah)

And there ain't diddly for IT jobs down there. You'd be commuting to where the jobs are: Most of the high tech work is in Seattle, or Bellevue/Redmond, which is about an hour+ drive from Tacoma in traffic. And housing in those three places is not cheap.

Personally, I would stay in Co Springs.

Boy he's talking a while back, how long have you lived in the region when was the last time you visited or took time to get familiar with Tacoma. I didnt think much of T- town when I moved here in 83' but its really changed for the better ( forced alot of the crap out to the county) the dowtown district is coming around rather nice and attracting alot of Seattle business to make the move for obvious reasons. Better watch out for the boom or it will just turn into another Seattle

Gang activity: hilltop, way down since the marine dude got pissed + every major city in the country
high crime, drugs: hilltop and south of city + every city in the country
"Tacoma Aroma" (paper mills... aaaaaaaaaaaaah): different type of processing these days not to mention some have shut down.

If you can find a job north of Seattle (like Everett, Lynnwood, etc) there are some decent housing prices in Marysville... but commuting from Marysville to Seattle/Redmond/Bellevue during rush hour just wouldn't be worth it.

I'm all for more Subaru guys moving to WA, but the job market isn't so hot for IT folks in Seattle right now.

I'd say come take a look for yourself. The IT Market up here is slowing, but it depends on where you are in it, and what skills you have. The weather isnt bad if you dont mind rain, but its fun with a Subie. Look at different places to live. Realistically, Tacoma isnt close to much up here, try Bothell, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Kirkland areas, you would find a good deal, w/relatively short drive to everywhere.

I'll tell you that I liked western Washington. The scenery and the weather and the people were all pretty nice. I miss Washington at times, specially since we are in a super drought and everything is brown. But I know nothing about jobs there.
