Default 1.8litre is sooooooo slow.....

wow. i have a 1995 impreza 1.8litre auto.... this is the slowest car around. If i pull out in front of someone i press my head as hard as i can against the headrest in fear of being rear ended. Then a few weeks ago a friend of mine replaced the axles and the CEL came on the car runs like a champ now... well not actually now... its on jackstands getting the Home Depot turbo upgrade. just figured id give you a laugh.....

All I ask is the available power to pass someone when I'm going 50+ mph. Stupid economical engine. I need to steal, loot and pillage for the ol' engine swap.

I hear an EJ20 somewhere out there calling your name...you'll love it! I'm still taking out revenge on all the cars that used to whip my ass.

Ill take a 2.5 for $900, or a free 2.2

At any rate, I always end up redlining this thing just to keep up with traffic But my little mods did help just a tad, but not enough for me to "challange" anything on a straight (which keeps me out of trouble, LOL!)

Yeah, I'll agree, it was real hard to get into any trouble with the L.

I always figured there was only really one way I'd get into trouble: I hooked up my suspension so it was rock solid, and I could corner like a madman, but I had to go into the turn with a big head of steam, since my car lacked acceleration to power through a turn. Since an AWD requires you to stay on the gas if you're cornering aggressively, I sometimes wondered if I ever began to lose the rear end, would I have enough power to regain control even if I gave it gas?

Well from my auto-x experience, the 1.8 doesnt "power" the car around corners very well Even if I floor it in 2nd going around a 35mph sweeper, it just doesnt seem to do anything different like everyone says it is supposed to

And with my rear end coming out now, its more a matter of NOT countersteering too much then powering out of it So I would have to say that its not enough power to help in any situation...

Naw, I just want a JDM ACVS DOHC EJ25 Better weight ballance than a turbo, no funky power increases on the track, and with the VVT it has better pull to redline than the USDM SOHC EJ25's

There's a sweet idea! Sounds like it suits your purposes, and is definitely unique, but it probably isn't as much fun as the turbo hit that the EJ20 delivers...to each his own.

The EJ20T is a little out of my price range. The engine itself is too much and the installation would be more than an NA engine. There's still hope for a 2.5L though. I might be able to scrounge up $1000 for the engine itself. Then again, $1K could buy a lot of cool suspension stuff. Hmmm....
At least the 1.8L gets pretty good gas mileage. It kinda sucks that I have to floor it to keep up with minivans and Saturns in the flow of traffic. I swear my GF's Accent pulls harder than my car.

Yep! The 3.3ltr engine that's in the SVX. Also the 2.7ltr H6 that's in the XT6. Old school baby!

Its so slow that if I get the opportunity, I would swap in a 2.2 without hesitation!

That doesn't do it justice! It's so slow that I wouldn't want to challenge a Metro if I street raced! At least that's how it was before the turbo went on!

For all you people with stock wrxs and other scoobys who say they are afraid to merge into traffic because the car is slow or the turbo doesnt spool up quickly enough I have one thing to say.

TRY BUYING A BUG

I owned , and still own (sitting in my yard), a 1970 bug. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it has a 1.5L pushing around 46hp at the crank. I think they did break 60hp with some later fuel injected models but my point is this car was fine and I drove it for years. Yes it was slow but I never merged into traffic where I didnt think I was going to make it and cause an accident.

He's referring to a major do it yourself, borderline ghetto job, although it sounds like Bobby knows what he's doing. A Home Depot turbo upgrade is another way of just saying he's doing a VERY low budget turbo kit.

If you think EJ18 is slow, try the EJ15 1500cc available in Impreza in Japan.

Eric
wasnt the last year of the 1500cc '66? 1970 or '71 came with dual port heads, toss on some dual throat 40mm webers and a few other cheap things...close to 100hp baby! Spend a few hundred on a stroker kit and 150hp is in reach, they start getting really fast at that point!

I love bugs

Yeah, I guess I should have said 1.6L since my car is actually 1585cc. Yeah its pretty cheap to get them to go fast but the 40mm webers give you more gas than the stock dual port heads need. For $300-400 bucks you can get the 40mm x 35.5mm heads which will work well. I did build another engine with those specs but also bored out the case to 1916cc. Should give about 125 hp which will make a bug pretty fast.
